You need to describe what you saw a little bit better me thinks.

weighted rope
what are you talking about?
Was it a Bowline on a Coil. Pre-dates the harness, and good for an emergency harness, and masochistic pleasure.

Add me to the list of those who aren't quite sure what you're talking about. A rope with weights on it? Was it like a belt around the person's waist?

the best way i can describe it is a rope about 4' long and the diameter of a nickel connected in a loop and the person wore one on each shoulder sorta wrapped around his opposite side the way you see people carry ropes sometimes. i was not sure why this person had this rope around there shoulder until i saw him toss the ropes on the floor w/ a thud. it looked like maybe it was metal wrapped in fabric like i said it was about the diameter of a nickel i hope this helps i would love to find out if this is a piece of training equipment that can be purchased some where

I have seen weighted jump ropes similar to what you described. Maybe that is what they were???

O.K., I know what he is talking about, since it's at my gym, so let me explain: It is a shell of an old rope, core removed, filled with sand, and ends sewn together to make a circle. Each rope circle weighs a pound or so... I am not sure how much, even though I've climbed with them...

And yeah, it's for hypergravity training. You can put on two, or 4 or six of those...

As to where you can purchase it-- the ones you saw are obviously home-made, and they live behind the systems board, feel free to grab them if next time you are at the gym.

But I am sure there are weighted vests out there somewhere, just as there are wrist weights, ancle weights ,etc.

Wait until you see people climbing with 50-pound chains attached to chest harnesses... Speaking of that, I haven't done that for a while, where is that chain, darn it!

I'm glad you found them and figured out how to make some cheaply.

I guess I deleted a chunk of my earlier post somehow without noticing... I swear I had a paragraph there saying that while the weights are there, it doesn't mean you should really climb with them at this point. Don't do too much too soon, since you are just starting. Granted, I don't know how well you climb, but the guy you saw climbing with those is most likely the guy who has been climbing since the age of 8yo ... he climbs 5.14s.

It's easier to make these if you use one inch tubular webbing. Fill with coarse sand if you don't want to buy BB's. For a heavier product, use TWO INCH tubular if you can find it.

Is that "hypergravity" or is that a simulator for the gear a climber can carry?

When I'm fully loaded, I carry:

harness with draws and biners etc -- 5 pounds
gear sling with everything I own -- 5 pounds
the clothes, shoes and helmet -- 5 pounds
lunch, water, rain- jacket etc -- 5 pounds

So I would carry 20 pounds of stuff, plus dragging that rope behind me.

Is that what he's simulating?

If you want a cheaper alternative to bb's, then go to your local serious gun store and purchase lead shot (the stuff used to fill shotgun shells with). It's a lot cheaper and it will weigh a lot more than bb's meaning you have to carry less of them.

Actually, the "ropes" in question ARE webbing. I should have edited my initial post. For some reason when I was writing it I had a clear picture of them in my mind as ropes... And then I went to the gym, looked at htem, and I was like DUH, what was I thinking! Simply shows why "eyewitness" account is completely unreliable. Tongue
