Hey, I am just starting out with waterfall ice. I currently have a pair of Sportiva Nuptse's and Vipers, which has completely taxed my budget. I own a pair of sabertooths for mountaineering and my friend, who is a big ice climber, swears by them for mixed and waterfall ice. Is he crazy? As a novice am I going to see a big improvement by dropping the $200 on a pair of vertical front points? Thanks Judd

they work fine for ice. they won't shear as easy either in crap ice the horizontals aren't to bad for mixed, i think they smear on rock better than the verticals, but that could just be me

The only time I use my mono's anymore is for pillar climbing and mixed climbing with cracks or lots of mono pockets. The Rambo 4's are a bit more stable on mixed than other mono points, I still use my horizontal points for leading just about everything up to and including WI5 and M6 so far.

I had the same fear when I started on ice, "do horizontal points work on ice?" Yep, they work just fine! save your $ for gas.

Here's the BIG TIP to really be happy with them: sharpen the front points. The sharper the better.
