that has not happened to me before, but here is what i would do: Find a more direct pitch to the summit, climb up and get to their belay station before the leader does. then with great precision and accuracy......take a poop at them. with good luck and a little skill you should hit your target. they are technicaly doing a different route, with a shared pitch. Whoever is ready to lead the pitch first gets to go.

That's the nice, polite way to pass a slower party. Whoever gets to the next pitch first climbs it first.

Me being one of the slower climbers, I always appreciate it when other climbers go ahead and pass. Otherwise, I feel rushed and can't enjoy my own climb. However, common sense would dictate that whoever gets there first has the right of way - but when in doubt - just ask.

im with boogirl. if the party is in that much of a hurry...let 'em go. i would rather wait 10 minutes, let get high enough up, and then enjoy my final "classic" pitchat my own pace, not having to worry about someone climbing on my ass...

ps-- ive done High E...I know what you mean...

As much as we may go to the crags for escape, other climbers are humans too, and will behave as such. Expect other climbers to act like other drivers on the road. People will cut you off. If you expect it then maybe it will be easier to accept.

Don't let em get ya down on the rocks, cuz if you're like me, they already get ya down everywhere else.

taking poops at them, you are a big goofball and stevematthys it has happened to you, remember the time we climbed wind ridge with team rope drop and that dickhead climbed it at the same time?

What i would do would be what i did make remarks just quiet enough so they can't hear them and then and only then could I brood.

I guess the main question would be "who would be holding who up" otherwise. In other words--if the other party did indeed get to the last pitch before you did, wouldn't they also be out of your way pretty quickly--so that you could have at it?

I know that some times it works that way--and sometimes it doesn't. I was with 2 other guys one time heading for a classic 3 pitch JT climb, when another party (of two climbers) figured out our destination and beat us to the base of the climb by about 2 minutes.

They went first--and took FOREVER. Our solution was to start up as soon as they got to the first belay. All 3 of us were up there before they started to lead the second pitch. So, we passed them. Pretty funny--a party of 3 passing a party of 2, but we did it. We topped out, rapped down, hiked back to the car--and watched the other two guys top out from there!

The amazing thing is that they were initially worried about being stuck behind us!!!

Well hopefully the other party would mention that their climb will be sharing a pitch with yours to at least give you the heads up. Then again, some people just don't care if they get in the way.

yeah, I'd say kill 'em all. Maybe you could rock-paper-scissors with the fools, but if they are obviously out to try and snag your 3rd pitch out from underneath you then screw 'em. Beat their asses (or at least threaten to).

I agree with the first come first serve! And would add that if another party is moving considerably faster than you, you should let them pass.Or maybe you should just POOP on them and hope they bail!

Climb faster. One trick is to set your belay just a bit higher (like 20 feet) if you know there is a good ledge, bring your buddy up super speed, and then just start hauling ass up the pitch in question. That usually works for me. Or you can just run it out and save the time on placing gear. Done that too.

TRADitionally yours,

I've had that exact situation happen to me, except only they climbed the first pitch of a different multi-pitch route, and then switched routes at the first belay. It was mildly annoying, but they climbed reasonably fast (my second was kind of slow) so it wasn't all that bad. The thing that sucked was that the leader didn't find the second belay station, and got off route, so we ended up passing them back after pitch 2, but then he downclimbed and came over to the second belay station (very apologetically), and played through up the third pitch. Again, rather annoying, but they were nice enough and friendly about it, so I didn't mind so much, particularly since it was clear they would be moving faster than us (something about the guy running out 50+ ft on 5.7 made that obvious).

I've also been duped by a guide in a somewhat similar manner, though that pissed me off much more because he was not at all forthcoming about what was going on, and pretty much suckered me. Big asshole.

I find that my poop is sometimes hard to store inside for such situations.

I like to keep mine in little plastic baggies. Then I get this toothbrush that I borrowed to my ex-trad partner who switched to bouldering, and smear just a teensy-weensy little bit on some of the holds at the end of the climb so that they don't know where it came from but it gets on their hands.

Either that or I like to bail off the climb one pitch early, and squeeze the whole bag of scheit into their approach shoes.

Delicious.

I guess MY first question is....what's the hurry? Aren't we out there to ENJOY the climb? I would much rather have a faster party pass me and get out of my way than to have them nipping at my heels all the way up, which may cause me or my partner to try and hurry and maybe do something stupid and get hurt. We all must learn to be courteous to others on the walls - that is no place to have a pissing match about who is stealing who's route. But then again, I am pretty old now (not much wiser) and have found that confrontations, foul language, and other 'less mature' actions rarely work to ANYONE'S advantage. IMHO..........

This is where climbing finally becomes sport and we go full contact.

Do the gentlemanly thing and challenge them to a duel. Find a route within both of your abilities and full contact free solo it.

Mad max, two men enter one man leaves.

He who isn't splattered, was in the right.
