Hi I'm a climber from the UK. I'm visiting Salt lake City for 3 weeks over christmas. The first two I'm spending skiing, with my family. I then have a further week with a friend ice climbing.
We won't have a car so will need to get around by public transport. Can anyone please suggest a good location, with cheap accomidation nearby?

christmas is dodgey, but if you really need to count on public trans your best bet is to stay in SLC and climb the ice in little and big cottonwood.
granted you may be cimbing the same line again and again and again.
provo canyon is really where the ice is, but i'm not sure about getting around with public transportation
MY SUGGESTION: do 2 weeks skiing with our family and then do 1 week of SKIING without your family
cause can you really get enough skiing, especially in UT? bring some backcountry gear and tour for that week!

Pretty sure you can take a bus to the mouth of Provo Canyon, but getting from there to Bridal Veil will be interesting. You can hitchhike--there are plenty of people headed up the canyon daily--but don't be surprised if it takes a long time to get a ride. People around here aren't as friendly and trusting as some other places.
There is some good ice in Salt Lake, but its limited. Where will you be staying (what town--downtown, or what)?

I'd be willing to bet that you could find someone on this site to give you a ride at least a few of the days. I know I would be willing to help you out a day or two. Like has been said, Provo canyon would be your best bet for the climbing, but public transportation in utah sucks. Just find some people to go with, and they can give you a ride.

The cheapest way would probably be by greyhound bus. I just googled it, and it looks like it would be about $70 one way to get there. Hope this helps.
