Just curious to who all of you fine climbers think is the "best" climber. I know there are many definitions of 'best.' But, to you, who do think is the pinnacle of the climbing genre.

I think that the best climber, and climber that stands for the freedom that climbing is....would have to be Chris Sharma. Also I think Dean Potter is just amazing... also they are both into 2 very deferent styles of climbing.

I think in the bouldering it very easy to rate a boulderer because it does not have the diversty of the routes here we : have big wall ,high difficulty ,sport indoors . In bouldering I don;t think we have these divisions . I think that the best boulderer is Bernd Zangerl . In the routes I think that we have to make some clasification from that divisions . Big wall -Huber Brothers of course High difficulty -hard to say there are a lot Sport indoors -I think Yuji Hirayama . Thats just my opinion .

I think Chris Sharma matches up pretty close with Bernd Zangerl. I believe they both have climbed as high as V15. Jason

Fred NIcole is a great boulderer, and has been bouldering for years now. Pretty experienced.

Huber, Potter, and lets not forget Tommy Caldwell (Salathe free in under 24hrs, come on!) and of course Peter Croft. Lynn Hill, Tori Allen, Katie Brown, & Tiffany Campbell are my tops in the women category, although I wish I knew more about awesome women climbers. Must put that on the to do list! Also, I do have respect for Sharma and Graham in their fields, because thats some hard core power! I also apologize in advance for not knowing enough international climbers. Arrgghh..so many great climbers!!! How can I narrow it down!!!! [ This Message was edited by: vegastradguy on 2003-02-12 16:38 ]

It's gotta be Chris Sharma. Even when he was around 15-16 he was one of the top boulderers in North America.

No offense to Sharma but as far as bouldering goes he has done one 8C (V15) Dreamtime. Bernd got the first repeat of Dreamtime and has put up 2 that are harder than Dreamtime (according to he and Dave Graham, who got the second repaet of Dreamtime) Fred Nicole put up Dreamtime and also Black Eagle S.D. both 8C I think Bernd, Nicole, and Loskot are at the top but Nicole hasn't tried Bernd 8C's and Loskot uses the B scale. Folks, This is pretty easy, really. If climbing were more widely documented like most sports, there wouldn't be much of an argument here. Let's look at the facts. As far as track records over the last decade go, Fred Nicole is really unrivelled in terms of pushing standards. Sure, Klem, Chris, Dave, John Gaskins, the Bock brothers, Bernd and others are hard as nails, but Fred really distinguishes himself in that he was the first to boulder V13, V14 and V15 respectively, thus consistently raising bouldering standards and enjoying a notably extended career peak (that doesn't seem to end): La Danse de Balrogs (first V13) Radja (hold since added making it easier -- but was the first V14) Dreamtime (the first V15) Add these firsts to literally hundreds of FA's 8a or harder and everyone else is just following in his footsteps. Note of trivia: Consider that at Hueco, I'd estimate that easily over 80% of the problems V10 or harder are the work of one man -- Fred. He was the first to introduce Americans to Font 8b and 8b+ (V13 and V14). Another note of trivia: Fred was one of the first to establish the route grade of 9a with his ascent of Bain de Sang in 1993. http://www.8a.nu/eng/articles/9th_grade_article.shtml#routes [ This Message was edited by: dhamma on 2002-12-24 13:32 ]

All of them. Regardless of grade climbed. If they climb, they're the best.

sharma is to climbing like gretzky is to hockey. Its funny cause whenever you go somewhere and see a sick problem there is always someone there that that will say, "WOW, im no sharma, if i was, id give it a try". The best climber, or one of them, is Barry Blanchard, a canadian mountaineer...the best, he has set new standards for climbing. As has Sean Isaac and Steve House.....

Jim Bridwell is super bada$$. I was talking to my friends dad at a tourney for wrestling and I had no clue he climbed. Me and him talked about Bridwell and Donini and all the greats. If you climb you are great.

hmm, i think i would have to say certain people just because their names always seem to come up: Dave Graham Chris Sharma Bernd Zangerl John Gill (the MAN in bouldering...) that crazy french builderer (Alain something i think? - dude who free soloed skyscrapers) Fred Nicole Yuri Not a single mention of WOLFGANG GULICH!! this is a stretch but Peter Croft (free soloing) that's all i can come up with... let me stress this: THERE IS NO ONE "BEST" CLIMBER OR BOULDERER OR WHATEVER! some problems/routes just work for certain people, some don't. I'm sure there is a 5.15a out that that Graham will get in a week that Sharma won't be able to do in a long time. don't turn this into an argument. mike

Fred Nicole is certainly an incredible boulderer and I would say nothing to detract from his well-deserved reputation. However, I suspect Jim Holloway might have done the first V13 back in the 1970s. I could be wrong.
