Pletcher was technical climbing when two anchors gave way from the rock face, causing the fall. The sheriff's office said Pletcher was not wearing a helmet.

"Two anchors..." sounds like regular trad protection to me. The Sheriff would probably not know, or not care, about the difference between cams, nuts, or bolts.

A University of Colorado student is recovering from back injuries and a laceration to the back of his head after falling about 30 feet while climbing on Practice Rock in Boulder Canyon around 5 p.m. Thursday.
The Boulder County Sheriff's Office was called to the 32.8 mile marker of Boulder Canyon Drive on a report of a fallen climber, later identified as CU student Reid Pletcher, 22.
Upon arrival, emergency crews found Pletcher on a steep rock ledge with injuries to his upper back and head. Two other climbers were with him and offering him first aid, according to the sheriff's office.
The other climbers were keeping pressure on Pletcher's wound and talking to him to keep him awake and from going into shock, Sgt. Bill Crist reported.
Responders determined that Pletcher fell after two pieces of equipment that anchor a climber to the rock face failed, according to the sheriff's office. At the time of the accident, Pletcher was not wearing any protective gear.
After the sheriff's office arrived, the Nederland Fire Department, Pridemark Paramedics and Rocky Mountain Rescue Group were called to conduct a tactical extraction to get Pletcher off the rock ledge. Flight for Life was called in to Boulder Falls because of the extent of Pletcher's injuries, and he was airlifted to St. Anthony's Central Hospital in Denver.
Boulder Canyon was closed to traffic for about one hour while Pletcher was removed from the rock ledge and then flown from the scene.

for 2 bolts to fail on the same line ... would be very unusual ... and scarry

This makes it two accidents within a short time where the reason has been that several pieces ripped. (other accident thread here: http://www.rockclimbing.com/...rum.cgi?post=2499502)
We don't have a lot of detail about this accident yet, but if the route indeed was a splitter finger crack, you'd think it would take bomber pieces most of the time. And again a reminder to always use a helmet when on the sharp end.
