I tried to post this in the Oregon area, but the site's not letting me do that yet.

I'm heading back to Oregon at some point this year, but/and I don't want to give up my ice climbing fix when winter comes. When I think of Oregon, nothing comes to mind as far as waterfall ice, unless there's something up in the MacKenzie Pass I'm not aware of. (I'm looking for WI3/3+, tops, preferably somewhere where you can put up a TR, as I'm not comfortable with the idea of leading on ice yet.)

So IS there ice climbing in Oregon? If not, where's the closest ice, do you reckon?

Thanks in advance,

Kate

There is ice in Oregon, though, you have to really search for it. The easiest stuff to TR is anything on a glacier.
There is some good ice on the upper stretches of Mt. Jefferson but anytime you head higher you get more Alpine Ice. I know of a couple of places out the Mckenzie but they are early season only. I have done a couple of routes in the bowl at Mt. Ashland but even those are stretching it. Access kind of depends how far you're willing to travel and where you are moving. :?

Venture to the gourge...MUCHO waterfalls...you just have to be lucky for them to freeze.

Thanks, folks. Let me rephrase this.

It sounds like there isn't much decent ice (if any) in Oregon. Where's the next closest?

Thanks,

k.

I'm not sure of any good toproping areas, but there are bound to be some. It's just a matter of finding it. I've found a great spot in Oregon, but the bulk of the routes we've been on so far are WI5 and up on a peak's north wall. What part of Oregon are you in?
