im going to buy a canvas dog bed cover and buy some foam to stuff it...slap some straps on and im good! its only gonna cost like 80$ i may be on to something....

I just made some crash mats myself. I used a fabric called ripstop, which cost me about $7 per metre. For the foam, I used an old foam mattress, and glued (you need a glue that won't eat the foam) a couple of layers of closed cell foam to one side.
In all it didn't cost me much, just a lot of hand stitching (which my wife actually did most of). Box stitch the corners to get a nice neat edge.
It works great too!
Leave one side free of closed cell foam for 'backslap' mode, for those problems where you are likely to land on your back, and it will also double as a great camping mattress. :P

yeah i think lox might be on to something
my metolius large pad was worth every cent of the 150 bucks i paid for it (though i wouldn't have minded saving money).
From every time i carry it on my back with the comfortable straps, to every time i land on it from 10 feet up and feel no pain, i am glad i bought it.

oh, and i do have 2 real bouldering pads you ass. a real bouldering pad is something that doesnt let your ankles snap and keeps you from bustin out your knees.

no anne, not really....just cant stand people who cant appriciate any creativity. its just an idea. if i said something sarastic for every idea on this website i would have alot to say.....anyway, about GS, one, i didnt have a ride, two, had to work and couldnt get off. im there next year tho.

a doggie pad huh...hmmmmm..i think there are better ways and cheaper ways to build a crash pad...but i think the weight would be a really big factor...
we should IM some evening and pick our brains...i am in!!!

Every single homemade crashpad I have EVER SEEN is CRAPPY.
You seriously just had a bad idea.
The time it takes to create something that you can carry and will effectively catch you is not worth the extra $40 - 60 it would take to walk down to your nearest gym and pick one up...
lol.
Get all pissed at me. Go with the dogbed idea and then come back in 3 months so I can tell you "I told you so."

I considered building my own crashpad before i bought mine. It's just a matter of convenience, as with anything else you buy. The extra money you'd save by making your own is not worth all the trouble you'd have to go through to make it...unless you have special connections or something. If you own a foam company, it might be worthwhile to build it yourself.
I DO think building your own pads for home gyms would be worthwhile..because they can be heavy and poorly made. I actually have a foam mattress right now..it was like 50 bucks(new). As soon as i get a new mattress, i'm gonna see if i can use the foam one as a crashpad. THAT might be worthwhile...50 bucks for super big, super soft landing pad. Plus you can sleep on it comfortably.

I am not here to say if it is a bad idea or a good idea. I am just here to give you the heads up, at sierra trading post they have a climbaxe pad for $99.99. might be alittle better than your home made pad and only about 20 dollars more.

I thought of making one also, but in looking at the ones at the store, I found that the foam that they use is heavy duty and I would not be able to find anything like that at the cloth store. So I will just buy one.
So I definatly think that the foam they use is heavy duty dense stuff that will support me if I fall from a distance as well as protect me from that stupid little rock that might hit my spine....

Where I live in SF, there are always matresses and crap on the streets. I'm always tempted to grab one, strap it to my roof, and take it to a bouldering spot. something about looking like a tramp stops me...

yeah, you can all go 'round saying that it's not much more to buy one... you don't live in Oz.
The cheapest pad here is $240.00, that's a locally made one. The average price is $300.00.
Surely you guys have rubber stores over there. If I didn't already have most of the gear I needed, it would have cost me about $100 to make a mat as good as the ones you buy - it's just rubber, foam and material sewn together, it aint rocket science.
My mat works great, it's sturdy, looks fine (I'm not embarrase to take it out) and it cost me next to nuthin.
So it doesn't have a cool label, I think I'll live. If dudes are looking at the equipment you're using, your not climbing well enough.
Go ahead pusherem, make one. Then post a pic.
I for one can understand that sometimes you just want to have a go at doing something for yourself.
PS you need a combination of open and closed cell foam to get good absorption. I looked at the specs for 12 brands, then took an average for my mat. Closed cell was about 25mm (1 inch), open cell was 60mm (~2.5 inches) Fabric used was ripstop from local dress making store.
