Ok, I realize I'm a cheapskate with out a job(against my will). But I hear people talking about having a gym harness and such. I was just wondering what the admission is at your local gym. I cant afford to go to the gym frequently enough to even think of having a seperate harness. In Ohio, they usually run for about 12 bucks (US) to climb a day, no matter how long or how short. I just wanted to get a general idea on how much gyms charge in your area. Thanks.

Rockreation, in Costa Mesa, CA, charges $15 a day and around four hundred every year. From what I hear the employees say, that is about the lowest that they can charge without the gym going under.

yeah personally i'm sick of paying the big bucks for a dusty, poorly lite place with routes that never change, 12-13 bucks is just too much, that's why now i divide my time between the 45 degree wall a home and the gym for roped routes

I think gyms around here charge similar rates. I quit climbing at gyms awhile back. I pull on buildings and the real thing only now. The REAL issue here is not "why is it so expensive to climb in gyms" ("or ski at hills, or take suba lessons or"_____<--your favorite game here) but rather, why in the HELL does everybody hafta SUE everytime they bump their toe????? THAT's the REAL reason gyms cost so much, pay their employees dirt, are poorly lit, and never change their routes. Sueing is a pretty fun to get rich quick, but it has RUINED the businesses of Guiding, rafting, gym climbing, etc etc.

The gym I frequent in the winter is in San Luis Obispo, CA The Crux Climbing Gym. IT is a hi-tec place with synthetic rock, auto-belay(no belay-slave needed here) and electronically-timed routes, etc. It charges 12 bucks but you can get a 30 punch-hole card for 180 bucks which brings it down to 6 bucks a pop.

We are around 10-12 per day in New Jersey with monthly rates around 50-60.

I do agree it is costly but it is a business and they are in it to make a profit. The cost is still a little less than the local raquet club or health club for us though.

Regards,
Larry

The gym I climb at is around $12 for a day, and that includes harness and shoes. You can also buy a monthly membership, which is $40, and includes shoes and harness, and then there are other membership deals, for years and such, but I dont remember how much. And if those are too much, you can usually help out around the gym in exchange for climbing time.

So 12 bucks seams to be the average joe huh? Like I said that is what it is here. But then you have to pay for harness and shoe rental, if you dont have them. Yeah, I agree with the suing issue. My freshmen year of high school, I had this cool english teacher and the lead up was "these are warnings that companies had to put on their products because of being sued" and one of the warnings on the label of a chain saw said, "Do not attempt to stop chain with hands or genitals". Thats why all McDonald's cups say, "Caution, Contents extremly hot". Ever hear of the one guy who stole somebody's motorcycle and wrecked and got hurt and sued the people for having the bad cycle? THat stuff Is bull crap. I can understand sueing a climbing gym if one of their ropes snap because of negligence, or if one of their belayers gets distracted and lets you fall. But if you break a nail on an undercling? Give me a break...

I'm from Vancouver and most gyms here are around $15 a day. The best deal I've seen is $5 from 8-10pm at the Romper Room in Nanaimo. I wish all gyms would give that deal since that is all a student like me can afford. And besides, who needs more than 2 hours of hard climbing on an average day.

Most of those $12 prices in the gyms I've been to INCLUDE shoes and harness. Rockjock, I sincerely hope you get a good job soon. It is a real bumber to hear about people losing their jobs. Hang in there!

Exposure here in Dallas:

$12 a day
$135 for a 15 punch pass
$35 a month - Pretty good deal I'd say.

And BTW....It was *not* Marie Antoinette who said "Let them eat cake." That phrase was misattributed to her, most likely by angry revolutionaries. She, however, said nothing of the sort. It was a phrase out of a book that had been published in the 1760s.

indoor gyms are a travesty and a blight on the face of a sport that was once about something besides comparing sport ratings, achieving corporate sponsorship and what one wears cragging.
the prices are too high because climbing has become all the rage, espn2 and the Xgames have led to an increase in demand.
i've worked in two gyms before it became a worse job than telemarketing for me and i couldn't force myself to go back.
the second one i worked in marketed to everyone except climbers creating an army of chubby folks thinking they were hard-core.
it charged 18 bucks a day for people to bring their kids in and fancy themsleves adventurers. it would just be silliness if it weren't so obnoxious.
hopefully climbing will go the way of all fads and we can have a peaceful sport back.

I'm extremely lucky, considering that I don't have to pay to use the gym that I go to. Since it's just a private gym, it only costs $20/year for the local high schoolers and alumni to use. Which is very cheap. However, when I go to other gyms, it runs about $12 to climb. So, I just usually stay home instead of going to other places. But, I agree with you, the prices are just way too high.
