Hi everyone, i had a strange thing happen just the other day - i was crimping with my right hand and matching feet on a small feature when suddenly my hand gave out a *series* of really loud pops in succession. It was so loud someone popped their head around the corner to see what was going on. Now, i'm not a doctor, but i don't think i particularly like my hand doing tapdancing impersonations on me while i'm trying to send boulder problems. My ring finger is sort of bulging and swollen underneath on the second pad, and i can barely flex my finger when i wake up in the morning. If i warm up it all seems ok, and i can send hard stuff, but i'm just a little bit concerned nonetheless... I know so many people ask - but any help at all on this one would be really bitchingly cool 8) on your behalf. many thanks, fred

sounds like a pulled tendon or pulley. if it was torn you coulndt climb. my advice is to rest and let it heal or you risk worsening the injury, tearing the tendon (wich lead to a LONG rest and possibly surgery) or even chronical injury. take a few weeks off (about 2 or 3 should do), then go back to climbing slowly. maybe even tape your fingers for a week or two. hope you get well soon.

For some reason I decided to just hang as long as I could a little off ground level, had on heavy hiking boots, one finger gave that loud crack, like yours it's swollen and won't close in the morning.

I had something similar happen. It sounded like a thick stick breaking everyone around heard it. It was a partially torn tendon pulley. I continued climbing easy stuff and kept making it worse eventually it hurt to pick up anything including an empty glass. I ended up having steriod injections into the area and not being able to use my finger for about 8 months. If I had taken care of it from the get go it probably wouldn't have taken as long to heal. If I were you (now) I'd lay of climbing until I saw a doc not being able to use that hand for 8 months was a pain. Hope things go well and I'm sorry if I scarred you. But it's probably better that than possibly repeating what I did. Heal well

 go. see. a. doctor. if you can find a hand/wrist specialist, go there first. just because it doesn't hurt too much to climb doesn't mean you didn't tear something. i just found out i've been climbing on a partially torn wrist ligament for almost a year, so you never really know what's happened to it until a good doctor looks at it. and, as said before, you could end up making it much worse without seeking the right medical attention. hope it heals well. :(

Dude sounds like you partially tore one or a couple of your pulleys. I say partially because if it was complete you would not be able to climb hard still. It would be too painful. Check out this post, and the links are good to tell you what I think you did. Good luck. http://rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=42987
