I am in the process of building a freestanding hang board. Has anyone built anything like this? Any input would be appreciated. I still haven't bought the wood, but I planned to scale down a standard, freestanding climbing wall design. A big A-frame with padded arms. I live in an apartment and can't drill the walls but would love to do some arm work at home. Thanks. TR

There is a sweet board described in the book "How to Climb 5.12" It is called "the machine". There is a couple of diagrams and a good description of how to build and use the beast.

Well I built a climbing wall in my apartment with 8 ft ceilings. I used 4x4's in the courners and framed it like a wall. I had 3 freestanding framed walls and a roof. The fourth wall is on hinges which can be locked into the ceiling to change the angles. I have a sweet wall but never use it. My advise is to mount a training board above your bedroom door and save your money. I dropped alot of money and wasted time building. All its good for anymore is a conversation piece. I just posted a few pictures of my freestanding adjustable crack wall. Its Sunday so they probably won't be on my page till Monday. Check it out. It works good but the only prob is it is not big enough for much climbing. But it works for campusing. I am planning to add to it and change it a little. Maybe some texturing and some more wall. Later.

If you get a sheet of plywood with those wood hangboards screwed into it, that would work. Make it free standing by putting some support beams at the bottom of the plywood and nail 4 thicker pieces of wood in a horse like pattern. [ This Message was edited by: miagi on 2002-03-25 15:50 ]

I just hung mine off the wall. so I can adjust the angle. but it does swing you you need a wide base. Campus On, Jeremy

Well, I built it this weekend. Bigger than I expected but cool. It is basically a scaled down wall. Two ply wood handy—panels attached to the back of two 2x4 triangles. It has adjustable angles. The panels are on the upper and lower ends of the back panel. It is about 8 feet tall. So, you can hang on the hangboard and practice footwork with the footholds on the bottom panel. I carpeted the arms. It looks pretty cool and my apartment smells like wood. (that is not a bad thing) All in all, it came out far better than I expected. I may design a pattern if anyone in interested. I will email it to you.
