Has anyone with bolting experience ever tried using a chest harness while they were developing a route?Any advatages/disadvantages? I'm trying to find a way to ease up on the ol' back strain while bolting steep stuff.

I'm trying to find a way to ease up on the ol' back strain while bolting steep stuff. The steeper it gets, the more a chest harness really helps. For long roofs/caves, you pretty much have to have one.

Yeah, it makes sense. I'll have to try it out. Speaking of bolting steep stuff, I'd like to know how you bolt caves – like the Pipdream cave at Maple. It seems like youhave to really be commited!

caves are by far the worst. the line had better be good to warrant the extra work/pain/suffering involved. yes, a chest harness is key when bolting steeper terrain.

I use an A5 big wall gear sling/chest harness all the time when bolting on the lead but what really helps the most is my handy-dandy Kong adjustable fi-fi hook!!!

Nope - never used a chest harness. Maybe I'm missing out on a critical piece of gear that could've made my life easier .......... but i don't think so.

I use a chair to bolt routes. Its a 16" x 12" X 1"+ plywood, with 1" webbing running uder it with extra for clipping in. Basically, I clip the cahir into the grigri (and the gri-gri to me via QD) and lower away! Very cozy! Not good for caves, but OK on overhaning faces. Have fun.
