I'm in need of a new climbing helmet, and, coincidentally, a bike helmet. I corresponded with Black Diamond regarding whether or not their Half Dome helmet would be suited for both uses. I was told by them that it is certified for climbing only, but that Kong makes a helmet (Kong Scarab) that is certified for use in several sports. (Kudos to bdel.com for their candor...!!!) I checked it out, and indeed this is the case, however, the thing is VERY expensive ($129), and certified only in Europe. Now, my question is: Might it be the case that most climbing helmets manufactured and/or sold in this country (USA) arent' certified for use in other sports because the manufacturers don't submit them for testing as such, or is it because they truly arent' suitable for cross uses...? ANd, whose standards for certification are higher: USA or Europe? X

I had a multisport helmet for biking and climbing and man . . . I hated it. Ebayed it after I got clued in and am much happier with a climbing helmet and a biking helmet. The helmets are fairly dorky, much higher profile, and just not as good for EITHER activity.
