This is a sad and sickening.

Read about the guy who climbed Everest 6 times, and beat up his Sherpa wife in Base Camp. Read about clients fearing for their lives, oxygen stashes being robbed, Sherpas demanding money in high camps, porn in mess tents, a 15 years old Sherpani slapped by her expedition leader - and a whole bunch of climbers looking the other way.

Connecticut George

The full story is quite a read, but you do have to register.

So why didnt anyone step up and let the Ahole try to take a swing at them? Sure its another country, he romanian, not nepalese, and deserves awhole lotta ass kicking. it a shame that no one would do anything, granted we only have the one side of the story. I personally would ask George to 'dance' or give him lessons if he wasnt willing to try.....

Dang! My dream of getting the first Drunken-wife-beating-porn-addict accent of Everest has been dashed.

I think something should be done about this. People pay all of this money for access to the mtn. and then they have to put up with this crap as well. I wonder if the clients that are supposed to venture out with "george" next year are aware of this article...

Interesting! There were hints of this in the original postings but I didn't pick up anything to this extreme degree.

I know three of the folks on the CT team - two in passing and one quite well as we climbed together for a couple of seasons. I think highly of all of them not only as climbers but as solid, nice people. So, I can only think that deprivations and the call of the summit are pretty powerfull changers of personality-at least in the short term.

Anywhere a bunch of people gather, their problems will follow. I will be content with climbing remote, little known peaks for the most part. Then again, I don't want to be ablle to spray about how I climbed Everest...

Gah - brain trying to jump out of my head. I have trouble placing faith in a story/article so rambling and incoherent.

Well, while I can't seem to find the Courant article referenced, I was able to find an editorial (two actually) about it.

The article referenced is the November 14, 2004 "The sunday Magazine of the Hartofrd COurant"

I actually have it one my desk. A co-worker gave it to me because I like "that climbing and mountain stuff" but he had never read it. Pretty interesting. With all of the he-said she said, I would love to have been a fly on the wall to hear what really happened. Altogether, though, bad news all around.
