The new D4 Double portaledge is stronger and lighter, and roughly half the weight and packed size of the current BD Double portaledge. It was designed specifically to enable lightweight big wall expeditions. Designed by John Middendorf, who developed the first truly stormproof portaledges back in the 1990's, and who recently re-ignited his passion for portaledge design after seeing his old designs become bloated with changes and "features" rendering them unfit for purpose, namely, lightweight alpine style big wall expeditions.
