Climber peeps, esp. those in/near/remotely near the Southwest :

Although much of Arizona's climbable areas are closed due to forest fire danger, eventually they WILL reopen, and I think we should celebrate the re-opening of the crags with a gathering in the grand canyon state! anybody willing to conceive of a post-monsoon-soaking climb fest? Just an idea.

Optimistically, the summer rains will allow our forests to reopen by late summer, early fall. We could also just say the heck with waiting and swarm Jacks Canyon, one of the precious few places we can still get our climb on these days What thinks?

Heck I might even come. I lived there for 4 years and moved to Boston a year ago. I wish I had gotten into climbing sooner rather than when I was just leaving AZ. I still can't get that sonoran desert out of my blood and look for any reason to come back.

so, what are you guys more interested in? Southern AZ (Mt. Lemmon, Cochise Stronghold, mainly), Central AZ/Phx area (i.e., Queen Creek), or Northern AZ (Paradise Forks, Oak Creek, Pit, etc). all of these places are on the "closed" list, but just as well if you want to wait for cooler temps...

BUT, if we scheme for a Jacks Canyon rendezvous, we can have it pretty much whenever we please

And yes, I know of the Beanfest. It's in the Stronghold in the fall and again in the spring. The last fall one was in October or November, and the last spring one was in April (same weekend as the Phx Bouldering Comp, I believe). I have never attended one, but I hear they're great climbing parties. Although... aren't they, by and large, really just known among locals? *shrug*

anyway. what area (and timeframe) sounds good for an AZ gathering, y'all? Look up Arizona in the routes database to get some kinda idea, or just ask on a post and surely some knowledgeable guy or gal can chime in

I vote N.AZ if it's still hot. There is bouldering and sport crags across the street from each other and killer trad crags 15 minutes away. That way, we can still keep everyone centralized. Plus Flagstaff is a kicka** town.

If this falls into the winter, I'd say Central AZ (Queen Creek). I can handle the heat in the fall, but out-of-towners may not like it. Sport, trad and world class bouldering all in the same area. Not much to do otherwise though unless you're willing to drive the 1/5 hours to Phx.

Just my preferred climbing areas. All-in-all, I'd say try for N. AZ. It's also closer for everyone traveling from the north by car(Utah, Nevada, Colorado).

Flagstone gets my vote, too! You can climb in the Pit on warm winter days so it should be good into late fall. Time to put my sport draws back together. Count on me, my spouse/partner (Jilly) and the Lil' Gecko (Janey). I am SO ready to touch rock again.

I can't speak for the rest of the Wrecking Crew (the Feenix people)... but I don't usually do group things. However, since I know you, and have climbed with you before, I might be cajoled into making a public appearance (a brief one, to be sure)

I'd be up for an AZ trip. I've wanted to check out Jack's Canyon for a long time, but would be up for other areas as well.

Jeff, Bobbie, Jay!! WOO-HOO!!!

The rest of you I don't know, but can't wait to meet you!

September sounds great, but will this conflict with anyone going back to school? On the plus side, it is after monsoon season so the areas should be open again.

I've heard a lot of plans already made for Labor Day weekend, so how about another weekend in September? Here are the dates:

Sept. 7th and 8th
Sept. 14th and 15th
Sept. 21st and 22nd
Sept. 28th and 29th

Do any of these dates work not work for anyone?

Also, let's here votes on where to go... As climbsomething said, we have:

Flagstaff (Paradise Forks-trad, The Pit-sport, Priest Draw-bouldering)

Phoenix (Queen Creek-bouldering, sport and trad)

Tucson (Mt.Lemmon-sport/trad) or Tombstone (Cochise Stronghold)

Winslow area (Jack's Canyon-sport)

Post the dates that work for you and the area you prefer.

Flagstaff is my first choice followed by Phoenix, but I'll climb anywhere. Any of the above dates except for the 13th-15th work for me (I'll be sea kayaking in Seattle! WOO-HOO!)

This is my second day on this website and I wanted to say how cool I think it is that this site exists. I was in REI the other night buying my first pair of climbing shoes and one of the employees told me to check out this site. I moved to AZ a couple of years ago and have been wanting to get into climbing. I went bouldering last weekend in San Diego and loved it. I want to learn more and woul be very interested in a gathering or even getting together on weekends. My name is Jeremy. Feel free to shoot me a note if anyone is interested. THanks.

I vote for the Forks (Paradise Forks, that is). Any of the dates mentioned in September work for me. The Forks is all trad/vertical cracks but has lots of nice topropes and superb camping.

Any of the dates would work. I would be interested in going just about anywhere mentioned. Would prefer the Flagstaff area though.

Any of those dates seem good to me. My first two choices would be Winslow or Flagstaff, but I'd go to Phoenix or Tucson, too.

I'd could probably make it if it is later in the month. Any of the areas are fine with me. I always love road trippin to new crags.

biggernhell - word.

phlyfisher (Chris)- Fantastic! That'd be awesome to actually get to climb with you this time!!

Well, the general consensus looks like Flagstaff.

Climbsomething~how does that look to you?

Everyone so far seems pretty flexible on the dates except for Chris so may be we should narrow it down to the last weekend (Sept 28th-29th) in Sept. We can always change it later if there are conflicts.

Anyone have any ideas for places to camp? Priest Draw? The Pit? The Forks? or one of the cheap hostels in Flag...

~Erica
