I think that rapping has to do with climbing. Reason being it’s easier to Rapp down after you set up top rope especially if your lazy like me. If I had to choose between the two though I would say climbing because it’s a little more challenging to get up a rock then down.

I'm getting a feeling that since this is a rock climbing forum, most people are going to say they like climbing better than rapelling. Climb on.

Dude, don't feel bad about people exclaiming their surprise that this question was even asked...(I'm on the verge of joining them) it's just that everyone here is basically a climbiing addict and given the choice between never climbing again and never breathing again most would say "Well I figure I can get one good shot at that short project of mine befor I run out of breath." Maybe a little extreme but you get the point

Deannimal, Dude(ette), If rapping is your thing then enjoy it! But yeah, you aren't going to find many around here that prefer it to free climbing. If you like rope related stuff more than free climbing you might try caving some day, seriously! Rappelling and Jugging is what it's pretty much all about. Instead of whimpy little 25 meter rapps you can do 300 meter ones instead! Of course that makes for a whole lot of jugging to get back out Have fun and don't let these rock rats get you down Hunter

I definitely prefer climbing. Most of the time if I'm not being lazy I climb up and down the rock. Rapelling isn't really my thing. This really is a weird forum since this is rockclimbing.com!

Maybe we just have a little language barrier here...I think in today's world "rapelling" refers to what actors do to get the feeling of being in the special forces, and having big guns and lazer sights Sometimes though, climbers are called upon to "Abseil". Abseiling is an inherent part of climbing since if there is no way to walk down one must either basejump or Abseil. I've been in this climbing thing for over 6 years and climbing is what it's about for me, but I wonder what the guys/gals who've climbed "Torres del Paine" or "Trango Tower" say about abseiling? Maybe, descending from their few thousand feet climb, they say:'Wow, check out the view dude...!', and continue to enjoy the abseil to safety. Enjoy and be safe L.O.D. Rappeling is what you do to get back to the ground after fixing three or four ropes. Also, you might have to rap to free your pigs when they get stuck under a roof. You can also rap down from the top to cut the pigs loose, if you took a chance that the last traversing two pitches could be hauled together. You might also rappel as part of a descent. Other than that, I don't know why a climber would rap at all.
