I get the same problem.

I haven't figured anything out except to take my shoes off and massage my feet. Convenient, eh?

Well, first off before you climb, you can put on a heating lotion and then stretch. If your up on the climb and your feet cramp up(which happens to me sometimes) then switch your weight onto the other foot and shake the other out. It helps for a little bit, but further up the route you need to shake off again.

My friend who has had cramping problems in the past says "the cramping is caused by an acidic (sic?) blood ph" and has since started taking two or thee Tums in the morning and at lunch when he's riding (one of my biking buddies) and he says he doesn't have a cramping problem anymore.

I hope this helps.

Are your shoes way too tight? I went up a size on my ski boots and my feet are so happy now!

I don't know how to prevent them, but I get them too and what usually helps is of you pull your big toe upwards, when you first do it it seems like it's gonna hurt, but it really helps me.

Eat bananas, they provide pottasium which helps reduce cramps to almost obsoleit.

I agree with ratstar. Alot of cramping problems can be traced to your diet. If you load up on potassium-rich foods (like bananas) your muscles are not as inclined to cramp or twitch uncontrolably (i hate that!). Also increased uric acid levels in your blood can oftentimes cause pain in the feet. You combat this (one way) by not eating as much red meat and eating more fruits (particularly strawberries).

Hey...i have a little history about cramping. The thing that made me just want to die on the rock was my fore armes. I was taking this stuff called GU. It is an energy booster that has just a bunch of stuff in it. But i realized like after10-15 mins after i took that crap when i was pulling on small pockets my arms would cramp like a mutha. so yeah...its the stuff that you mught be eating...watch out for the GUUUUUUUUUUU!

Bananas help with cramps. Supposedly peanut butter does too but I have yet to try that one.

I agree with the other "scientific" answers that have been posted such as eating bannanas and the tums could possibly be helpful, the tums however could cause your body to overload on calcium, which actually can cause cramping. The overload of uric acid in the body, and the build up of lactic acid in the muscle cause cramping. The easiest way to get rid of these is: for the uric acid changing your diet can definetely help, but the best thing to do to lower uric acid in the bloodstream is to drink a lot of water (i.e. your urine should be clear), for the lactic acid, I know it sounds crazy but "stretch" out your foot after you warm up.

Bomber took my answer.
Water is the key!
But if you are climbing cracks and your feet are cramping. Well all I have to say is "thats crack climbing for ya!"

Eat bannanas, drink water, and wear shoes that fit is all I do.

This sounds to me like a lack of strength in the foot, or alternately your shoe's midsole is too thin for you (too much sensitivity in the shoe). Perhaps you should go for a stiffer shoe for next time as this will definitely decrease the amount, or even maybe cure the foot cramps.

Other than that I agree with most people by taking off the shoe and massaging your foot. (A slight inconvenience however, 100 ft. up a face!)

i used to have this problem to. Maybe your feet have to get used to your shoes, but wat i did to help with it is after climbing, put my feet in some really cold river or creek water. i found this to help, but if ur in a really dry area or the gym i dont know wat ud do. maybe bring an ice pack or something, but this is just my input
cheers

spoon: no, it can be from lack of magnesium.

overdosing calcium leads to cramps and in the end to a prolonged contraction of the heart (death) because it makes the motorical synapses work better, while magnesium hinders their working. so, if you have cramps drin magnesium, but dont overdo it, it is actually an antidote for calcium and can cause a form of narcosis, leading to coma and ceasing of breathing/heart functions. buth both cases are really extreme, hard to manage throug drinking solutions. so, just drink some Mg in a form of one sulluable tablet (go to a pharmacy for them) a day until the craps stop. if they dont, go see a doctor.

hope i was helpfull.

I used to cramp, but the combination of OJ and streaching before climbing helped. I also found that when your foot starts to cramp, (if you can) straight leg the cramped foot and lean on the heal and slowly pull the toes toward you. Other then that, I haven't tried any of the other suggestions.
