There won't be much need for those "WI" ratings down here. Especially in July where you're moving. Yikes. You couldn't have planned a worse time of the year to move. Brutal temps. There are several of us in the area who get together on occasion. Hope our paths cross. You'll quickly find out that a three hour drive north from Tucson to Flagstaff is worth the effort on the weekends, though I've heard there is some good climbing higher up on Mt. Lemmon that time of year. Ed

Tucson is excellent. At your level and style, you'll want to get on R-1 which is at Windy Point. Also, for the type of climbing you're doing you will rarely have to take the "three hour drive north from Tucson to Flagstaff" in the summer. Check out the Reef of Rocks. Where Eaglets Dare and Penelope's Tapestry are good moderates at that crag. After climbing in Arizona for 17 years, I am still particularly fond of Mt. Lemmon and the Catalina Range and its abundance of routes. The "improved highway" has increased accessibility which means more idiots will be throwing rocks from the road, stealing tents, and squatting on pre-paid campgrounds. This can be mitigated by climbing further from the road and not camping. peace, D

You'll love climbing out here. There is a lifetime supply of climbing within a 2 hour drive. Cochise stronghold has some world class climbing (ssshh, don't tell anyone) We are very fortunate that none of the crags here are busy. Half the time that I go out, I never see any other climbers. Unless of course you hang out with the sport weenies at the sport crags ;-) I'd be more than happy to go climbing with ya, can't ever have too many partners. If you've got any questions about the area, I'm very familiar with it......

I had not heard that it burned. Unfortunate. Do you have pictures or links to pictures of the area that you could post? thanks, D

Unfortunately, most of the top of Lemmon was pretty wasted in that fire a couple years ago. The good news is that there are some pockets of trees that managed to survive. I haven't been down to the Reef since the fire, but the damage to the area around Rap Rock, Fortress, and Ravens wasn't as complete as I was expecting. Still, very sad to see such a beautiful place brought so low. Couple shots from August of '04...
