Hey all, I was wondering where the best place would be in order to fly into to go climbing in Yosemite. Thanks.

If Tioga pass is open, I like to fly into Reno, it's a much more scenic drive, and usually cheaper tickets. If the pass is not open, Sacramento and Fresno are about an equal distance, so go with the cheaper ticket.

Fresno is just about 2 hours from Yosemite Valley (I did that drive tons of times when I lived there). It is definetely the closest airport to Yosemite. It is a small airport though and tends to be a bit pricier to fly into than Sacramento or the Bay Area airports.

Closest airport with passenger service is probably Merced Municipal Airport. Closest airport should be Mariposa/Yosemite, but no commercial passenger service.

The problem with Fresno is that you have to drive all the way through the southern part of the park which is kinda slow, and the traffic out of Fresno can be really bad. Fresno might be a shorter distance than Sac, but I think the drive time is about the same.

In reply to: Good luck finding a reasonably priced ticket to Merced. Fresno is still somewhat "mainstream". You can fly there for $90. It really depends where you're coming from. And the OP didn't mention that, or include location in his profile. YARTS will take you from there to Yosemite. I'm sure Fresno is cheaper and easier to get to from most major airports.

Having done both drives dozens of times, I can assure you that the drive from Fresno to the Valley is reliably 1-2 hours shorter than the drive from Sacramento. SFO is about 4 hours, 5 if there is traffic. Fresno 2.5 hours, traffic generally not a significant issue. Los Angeles, about 6 hours more or less depending on traffic (can be a nightmare) So figure your ticket costs, rental car costs, and a value your time, then make a call Peace KARL

In reply to: Fresno...is a small airport though and tends to be a bit pricier to fly into than Sacramento or the Bay Area airports. I'll second that. If you fly into the Bay Area, Oakland is the closest and often cheapest place to go (~3.5h without traffic). Southwest...my personal favorite for their baggage policy amongst other things...does not fly into SFO, but does go to Oakland and San Jose. I've never been successful at finding a better bargain when I've looked into Sacramento too, but I've definately looked there less. If you're renting a car, it might be fun to be a tourist for a few hours in San Francisco and get some excellent food. Less so in the Central Valley, IMO. The drive from Reno could be nice, but I wouldn't want to count on getting over Tioga Pass in the early or late season. The best reason to fly into Fresno, if you get a bargain or elect to pay more for the convenience, is to enjoy your first view of the Valley big rocks from the Wawona Tunnel. Woowwweee!!!

In reply to: If you fly into the Bay Area, Oakland is the closest and often cheapest place to go (~3.5h without traffic). I assume you are coming from Philly... I do this jaunt a few times a year. Philly to Oakland is usually cheaper and definitely much more convenient than Philly to SFO. Will also put you at least 30 minutes closer, more if traffic sucks more than normal. TS

In reply to: The most recent thing I've heard on Tioga is that it will not be open till July. Haha...so the speculations have already begun? I have flown into Sac a number of times because Delta usually has competitive fares and a direct flight from Salt Lake, that's why I have used Sac. Reno is a good Southwest airport, and often has screaming deals, if you check their internet fares. When I did the Nose I got to and from there for $100. I usually only go to Reno in the Fall, as the spring is too much of a gamble with the snowpack.
