Can anyone out East recommend a good gym in To for some friends of mine that live out there. Looking for a good beginner course and good atmosphere.

Thanks

Paul

The quality of the TO gyms has been discussed in the Ontario Section ad nauseum. Just incase you can't find it I'll sum up.

Joe Rockheads as Gripped put it "low and Hostile" The people aren't that great but they have a good variety of entry level routes as well as what appears to be fairly comprehensive training. Plus they have a good beginer lesson deal.

Oasis, by far the most freindly Gym in Toronto, but the climbs are killers. I'd hesitate sending beginers there unless they really want to push themselves. The place can be a little discouraging to newbies from a difficulty standpoint, but they'll learn.

Toronto Climbing Acadmy, this gym is odd, people have very little to say about it. The variety of climbs is aparently good and so are they people, but no one has really said it great or terrible.

If your freinds want to drive a bit, Gravirty in hamilton has the best combination of climbs, teaching and atmosphere. The people are freindly, the climbs are chalenging (though there are currently a little sparce in the 5.5, 5.6 area). If your freinds are already fairly strong they should be able to handle most of the lower level climbs there, no problem.

Just to add. Joe Rockhead's really goes out of the way to cater to beginers. If you sign up for $45 you get their 3 hour belay course, shoe and harness rental, a free t-shirt and a free two week membership. They also have a section that is dedicated to beginer climbers.

Personally I'd have to say Oasis does have the better atmosphere.
