I am now playing around with the new forum system from phpBB. I think I may just take the plunge which means it could be painful over the next few days. However, I would like to get some feedback from people before I do this. http://www.rockclimbing.com/bb/ NOTE!! This is a copy of the data as of July 2nd. It does NOT update the old forums. In a few days we will delete anything in the new forum and update it with the changes in the old forum. So feel free to play but don't expect your changes in bb2 to be seen in the forums. Also, this is very rusty now, but you should be able to get the picture. Let me know what you think. Trevor

Personally, I think the new forums are not as aesthetically pleasing as the current one. What are the benefits of the new forum compared to the one we are using now? Are there operating issues with the current one that is forcing an upgrade? Thanks! ~Erica

Good Job, Trevor. I think it looks a lot cleaner and easier on the eyes - also better places the most used items. Now just need to customize the .css or style sheets for it and we'll be home free. Good call, man. Mick

Just a side note: the new forums don't force you to login when posting, merely ask for a username. So I could in theory post as Trevor, though it likely logs the IP for each post, but still...otherwise looks good, though I personally found nothing wrong with the forums as they are. Mike...

I agree with climberchic, they don't look as good as what we've got right now. Also is this going to increase the cost of running rc.com? I think the forum set-up we've got now works well and I'm not sure what the reasons are for changing it. woodsE

Quote: i like the new forum. now to make it perfect, just add the dr. piton forum (as requested numerous users) thanks, Len Numerous users also requested that he be permanantly banned from the site, but that didn't happen either. Re: forums... What you're looking at now is basically the default design, with a little editing we could use all the colors of the old forums or use one of the premade themes as you can see at the phpBB Styles page All the regular rc.com links etc would have to be incorporated into the design somewhere as well, I'm not sure if trevor is planning on putting the forum inside the standard rc.com top and side menus or just adding something new. Benefits, some are minor and some the average user won't notice but will help the site run smoother: -Powerful and extensive authorisation system -Strong encryption to keep passwords safe in the database -Powerful search facility [the current search is down and slowing the server, we need this one] -Message formatting with various font styles and sizes as well as allowing quoting, code display, image posting and automatic URL linking -Polls can be simply added to posts -Email notification of replies to your topics -Powerful topic subscription capability -Email-like private messaging system -Supports local, remote and uploadable avatars -Mass delete/move/lock/unlock of posts -Topic splitting -Option of auto-pruning of old or unanswered messages on a per-forum basis -Extensive ban management, ban by email address, username or single/multiple IP address or hostname -Multiple styles available for the user to choose from -Ability to skip to any page of a thread -Ability to skip to last posted reply in a given forum or thread blah blah blah, plus some stuff to make the admins lives easier. As far as costs go, this forum is completely free and runs on a better code base which should make it run more efficiently, thus costing us less money in the end. It will take some time to work out the bugs, but right now we're trying to get an idea of whether it's worth the conversion or not based on what the general populace would like. In case anyone cares, Trevor and I are both very excited to implement this forum

oh, and also, go to the new forum, hit reply to any topic and scroll down to see the previous posts, rather than opening it in a new window. I think that's one of my favorite features.

I use that format on another site and would like to stick with what we have now.. It's just a personal thing... I don't enjoy the other site as much and wouldn't want this one to look like the one that annoys me. But as I have said before this is a PRIVATE enterprize, owned by individuals, and you have the right to do with it as you please! Jeff We try, and try, to keep things the same... They call it progress! Andrew Firpo

A question, is it possible to add a new or some new emoticons? I haqve seen this one that is a foaming beer stein. I would love to be able to send someone a virtual beer. The emoticons we have are alot of fun, so can we get more?

The new forums seems too cold, impersonal, and uninviting. Part of the problem is the icy blue/gray color scheme, but I think the layout may be contributing to the effect as well. -Jay
