Hello fellow Canadians of Rc.com,
I've got two climbing buddies of mine who are biking from Montreal to Vancouver starting in May. They'll be following the Trans-Canada highway most of the way across.
They're doing it as a personal challenge, but as well, they're planning on raising some money for a charity of their choice. They have yet to decide which one, but I'll post that up when they let me know.
They've got a two-pronged request:
1) They're going to have their climbing shoes with them, but no harnesses, rope, etc. So, they'd be interested in bouldering mostly. But if anyone knows of any good bouldering along the trans-canada highway, or short jaunts from it, they would appreciate that info. If anyone is willing to share a rope and harness with these boys, they'd also really appreciate it. They'd take a harness, etc, but they're trying to cut down to bare essentials, y'know. They might pick up Harnesses when they make it to Squamish (don't know if it's on the highway, but they wanted to make it there).
2) If anyone would let them crash out on their floor, backyard, etc, and let them use their showers. These boys are always up for buying their share of the beers too.

Bumped as the trip is approaching soon. I still don't know what charity they'll be funding, but will post when I finally remember to ask.

So, they're looking for a good charity which does work in the Darfur region in Sudan, any advice anyone?

so the charity they decided to go for is Medicins Sans Frontieres or Doctors Without Borders,

For every $ pledged to these boys, 80c wents will go towards MSF. Right now, Ian is drawing up the pledge sheets, and then they will be sent out to those interested.
As they tour, they will try and raise awareness about the current humanitarian disaster in the Sudan.

That's awesome biking for charity. Let me know if they need some assistance in Thunder Bay. Some climbing right on the highway. Orient Bay is the place to see.

Who gets the other 20%?
Squamish isn't on the Trans-Canada, but it's only a morning's ride up the Sea to Sky from Horseshoe Bay, which is.
An interesting, and challenging, variation would be for them to ditch the Trans-Canada at Lillooet and take the Duffy Lake Road across to Pemberton, then the Sea to Sky down through Whistler to Squamish. It would be a lot more scenic, IMO, and would avoid biking through much of the Fraser Canyon, which is a terrbile road and dangerous enough in a car.

tell them to call me up when they pass through Calgary. I bike all the time...I rode from Vancouver to Newfoundland myself back in 95. I also own a bike courier company here. Have also ridden from here to Vancouver several times, I could probably offer some advise. As far as climbing goes, I'd be happy to take them out climbing when they are in the area. Have all the equipment including some extra harnesses.
Keep the rubber side down, and maybe I'll see you in 4 or 5000 km :)

In an update, all of the money they raise will be given to MSF. A pledge sheet will be posted for those interested in helping raise money and awareness about the situation in the Sudan.
THANKS so much for those posting places to climb or crash, I know Ian and Lou will be stoked to hear that there's good climbing not that far away in Ontario. I may be wrong but I imagine that they won't see too much climbing in the praries :P

first off, i tilt my hat to fellas for living the dream and makin it a worth while cause in the process. if i had a had a place, i would offer it up forsure!!
as for the 'Trans Canada Highway', it's more or less a dumpy little dirt path that connects the two coast's of the most amazing country in the world and is familiar to "most" quebecers as "the sh#thole known as the rest of Canada!!"

They were in Sudbury a day ago... by their accounts 600km west of where they started. Not bad for a week... and nothing compared to how far they're going to go.

Man, that's not too bad, now just across the praries (yawn, so flat) and over the rockies (oh man the climbing there)

They were half-way though Sask. last I heard from them, and I'm posting to encourage any other kind-hearted souls to put them up for a night in their yard/take them climbing, etc.
