Maybe they weren't rapping from the helicopter, but rather poorly belaying the helicopter.

In reply to: However I probably wouldn't make a habit of rappeling on a Gri-Gri after reading through this forum. Why not? It's a great rap device. Oops, did I just whack a dead horse...

To those of you who mentioned electricity, in any way, NO. Just NO. The electricity thing is being blown out of proportion because it's not understood. Try not to do that okay? Static is the least of your worries when rappelling from a helicopter.

I think all you can collect from this forum is that it is a great device to rappel from a helicopter. It isn't all that clear if it is good for rappelling from a plane though, maybe someone can clearify. It would be great if you could rappel from a plane. Airlines never let you board with your own parachute, but an unsuspecting gri-gri would be perfect.

The Grigri works for gyrocopters though. A Fig-8 is good for rapping out of an ultralight, although if it's not a 2-place trainer, you may need to rap pretty fast.

I saw this episode too, and it almost looked like they had something else too, like a form of backup. Because in there left hand they would lower themselves, but they each had their right hand higher on the rope gripping something else, maybe a petzl shunt?

See my post at the top of the page. It's a great rap device. The main problem for general use is you can only rap a single strand. That's great on a fixed line. It should be OK if you're rapping two ropes tied together with the knot against a rap ring. Gets trickier if for example you need to do multiple raps on one rope. There are usually solutions, but they may not be solutions you like.

I will give only one bad reason for rapping with a grigri... it tends to grab at moments which can load a precarious anchor (imagine a rooted bush, detached block etc.) Normally you are tradding when this happens which means a reverso or 8 is at hand...but you never know. I took my grigri to Chamonix and rapped with it off a detached block and it grabbed the rope when I let the handle up just a little too far and the block shifted.....argh.

If you are worried about static electricity you might try clipping some sort of ground to your scrotum. Who knows? It might help. Funny, funny, thread.

So lemme get this straight. If a fixed wing plane is gunna crash you wait until you are a rope length from the ground and then you simply rap down a single line to the ground. Yep, I can see how that would work.

I rappel on a grigri a lot.. Though Ive never experienced a wicked shock to my balls... never heard of anyone else experiencing it anyways. And by the way, why dont they have climbers on that show, we would throw down. They always seem to have these fat balls o'crap that are scared of everything even though its backed up with every safety precaution.

In reply to: In reply to: Airlines never let you board with your own parachute Are you sure about this? I'm not a skydiver but would like to be someday, and have read online that you can bring your chute, although this may have changed post Sept. 11th... Um yah. Kinda has to do with the whole "really fast", "really high", "really cold" thing. Plus you have to factor in the "bumping into other people or the back of the plane" on the way out, the skills needed to control your free-fall, and finally, the landing "um...should I aim for that big, flat spot in the amusement park, or the desert, or Lake Michigan, or South Central?" I'll take my chances eating somebody, thank you. The only planes that'll let you board with your chute are ones you're gonna jump out of for skydiving on purpose.

In reply to: It's risk versus reward. I think that the Fear Factor staff probably thought their system was safe enough, and it didn't end up failing. But it could have failed, eh? After all, it was a grigri. -Jay
