I don't really care for the light and so, but I look if the photo isn't taken from too far and if the climber isn't just resting on a good hold. I also like it if the rocks are in one and the same color, most likely white or yellow. A blue sky is always helpful for the perfect picture too.

There's a decent article on climbing photography on www.planetfear.com.

I like to avoid "butt shots" and usually try to follow the 1/3 - 2/3 rule for balancing sky and rock.

I think bouldering photograpy usually does a better job of really capturing the intensity of the moves, angle of rock, etc., because the photographer can choose better positions.

i like to employ the occult balance principle and chiaroscuro , plus it would really help if you studied the principles behind artistic composition. its good to experiment to establish your technique, as soon as you find that out stick to it.
