I'd like to see a shallower DOF. The background is pretty busy and should be muted. The color is good and more important than the detail anyway, so by blurring this we still get the nice juxtaposition without our eyes freaking out trying to find a focus.

imho the background is too sharp (hurts my eyes kinda) and the climber a bit too dark.

I like the green but i agree with the above comments, blur it more. I would also try to bring out Todd's face if at all possible. Props to Todd, I've briefly met him on several occasions up AF and at the Quarry, strong climber with a great attitude.

I changed the picture as suggested than updated it on my server. looks like it's a live link here because it shows the updated version above. i was going to post the new version so they could be compared but i lost the old one. i'll make a new link to show the old one as soon as i get a chance.

You've picked up some annoying artifacts around your climber (and a little bit of blurriness. There may be an easier way, but here's what I'd do:
Use the extract tool (Image: Extract) to separate the foreground into a separate layer. Send this to the bottom of the layer stack for now. Now, on the background (original) image, clone out the climber and a little bit of the wall. Apply your blur to this layer, and put the extracted layer back in front. This should get rid of the annoying aliasing artifacts.

Yep. I had similar problems trying to adjust the tree in my picture (the "yet another panorama" picture). I eventually gave up, 'cause trying to extract that sucker would be a biiig job.

I am far from a purist when it comes to photoshop. However, forced DOF is one thing I just don't like. If you didn't get the effect in-camera, then try the shot again.

The DOF field issue wouldn't be such a big deal if the rock he's climbing wasn't such a drab color compared to the popping green background. The action has merit and the texture of the rock is fascinating.
