Get an Ecrin Roc or a Halfdome. Those are good helmets

I bought a Camp helmet and it's a really good one: it isn't heavy and it is a strong one, easy to adjust. And it isn't as expensive as the Petzl ones.

Petzl Ecrin rock. It's already saved my life TWICE... I took a 40 ft. whipper and slammed into a solid granite face in May. The helmet cracked, but I was unharmed (in the head anyway) I bought another one as soon as I could. I've also taken a baseball sized chunk to the head -- right in the middle! Didn't feel a thing. Scary as all get out, though!! [ This Message was edited by: talons05 on 2001-09-26 12:27 ]

The good thing about the Petzl Ecrin Roc helmets is that they won't "tilt back" when you look up. They are extremly reliable and the suspension system rocks!

I just bought an Edelrid ( the orange construction worker looking one), and I gotta say I love it. I'm seeing huge following for Camp helemets at the crags I visit. the are the best buy for your buck. Reliable and cheap.

Rock fall -- A week ago I was out climbing and a TV size rock came down from 50ft.... Guess where is landed exactly where I was standing. That was freeky. No helmet would have stoped that. But yes I agree you should always wear a helmet.

Your very lucky. I am glad to hear everyone is going to buy a helmet. But don't leave in the bottom of your pack like I do. And don't use your friends bike helmet, these won't do. However, I quess it would be better than nothing. Though you may get some stares. Keep it doubled back

That's good advice. Just don't be fooled into thinking that mental and physical alertness will compensate for not wearing a helmet...

You should also get close to the rock if you hear someone scream 'rock' (except if you're far enough from the wall of course), more chance not to be hit.

Bart your resoning as to get closer to the rock works in "theory". But there are alot of factors that rule it out, IE the route is on a slab, the rock will tumble down the slab and if you are near where its tumbling you have a greater chance of getting hit. So in that specific case you would want to be away from the rock. Just my 2 cents though.....anyone disagree?

Sorry comp, I just said what I've learned. But you're probably right. I don't have any experience with being hit by rockfall...

Do yourself a gigantic favor and go and get a "real" rock climbing helmet. A bike helmet is not designed to take the blunt force impact of a rock coming down from more than 15 feet or so. Plus the suspension system of a bike helmet is usually just foam. You need the support of the webbing straps inside the helmet to be "truly" safe when climbing.

I actually just use a skate boarding helmet. It was more convenient for me to buy (there's a store called 'Sadurz Pro' just down my road), and probably about the same cost aswell. But I forget the brand of helmet I have, sorry guys!
