Hi Anyone here climbed the East Lion, near Vancouver. Apparantly its easyish, but I want to know if its simple enough for me to guide some friends with little climbing experience up there. What are the normal routes, and where can I find more information? Also, is it suitable to camp on top of the West Lion? Cheers Peter

It's been quite a few years since I've been up there, but from what I remember, the east Lion is a fun mellow climb depending on the route you take. If your friends have a just a little climbing experience, you'll probably want a rope for the easiest route. It's a bit harder than the West lion and can be a bush thrash, again depending on the route. There's some decent campsites at the base of the West lion which are probably more comfortable than hauling your stuff up scramble on the West lion. Good route descriptions are on bivouac.com if you have/want to pay for a membership. Otherwise Fairley's guide to hiking and climbing in SW BC has a good description (for Fairley anyways).

Thanks lehrski for the info. I assume "watershed" means water catchment area. Doesnt the hike up to the West lion go through this area as well. At least the route from the Sea to Sky hwy. There is a warning that you are going into the watershed area (from my memory anyway), but nothing saying no entry. Naturally we dont drop rubbish, and dont use the natural facilities (restrooms) in the area. Is it really prohibited to go in there? Hiking sites dont mention it at all. :?

Yeah, the hike up the West Lion is in the Lions Bay watershed, and they don't matter as much as those of us in Vancouver :) so you're allowed to hike there. The last bit up the West Lion is most likely in the Vancouver watershed, but I'm not sure why there is no ban on it. The East Lion is definitely in the watershed and definitely illegal to climb on. I don't know how well it's enforced though. My guess is not too well, although on a sunny summer day, you may get some frowns.

The West lion, easiest route is 3rd class. A couple of exposed bits, but definitely not technical. The east lion felt 4th to low 5th but that could be routefinding.
