I was just wondering, I know the established ones been around forever and most new routes/problems are made or improvised by the more expert climbers and those with extremely vivid imaginations; my question is how the hell do people come up with the names for these things? Is it just trying to come up with the name that will stick out in peoples' minds? I know I wouldn't forget something called Jimbo's Castrated Cadaver or Freaky Deaky Ding Dong. It seems like bands and climbers are pulling names out of the same hats. Personally I like Beans and Cheese Tortillas Side of Guacamole.

Well, everybody who FAs a new route og problem wants to be remembered as hardman who freed MegaJugHaul III. So you pick a name that'll stick. And you want to be as funny or glorious or respectful as you can, since the name'll stay in a guidebook forever. So you get dirty names, pretentious names, tributes to idols, insider jokes, routenames commenting on other routes and so on. Actually, I think that routenames in general says a lot about what kind of people climbers really are...

In a recent climbing - i can't be bothered to fetch it - the offwidth named Squat in Vendauwo(?spelling) was explained: It's an overhanging offwidth between two large rounded "buttocks" - and in there you hang, sticking out like a turd, ready to be shat out... eeww.

Grover thanks for the link. It gave me something to laugh about during my 8 hours trapped in a room with no windows.

It is nice to give inspirational names to routes. Too many people today are giving routes names that reflect negativity and explicit matters

Not Everything deserves a name. It's nice to name a climb after something that happened or something that was said during the climb. "Flight of the copperhead", should be self explanatory haha! "Party Rock", was named after the large rock that the FA guy pulled off unexpectedly. SOmetimes there is a good story behind the climb name. I wish guide books included more of those stories. There are funny stories behind "Southern Softmen", "Screwed", and "Pappy Gets His Feet Wet", for example.

There was a route I made at the local gym. It used a big pink hold that you could double up in with your hands. My friend with me was talking about how to do it and said "okay then i go deep in with my right hand..." and I had a route name then and there... "deep in the pink" I think you're right when you said names reflect peoples' personalities.

I named my last problem "Booze Cruise." It was fitting because the trip we were on seemed to be one persistent booze cruise.
