Hiya,

I'm looking at purchasing an external flash unit for use with my D-Rebel. I'm looking for experiences with flash units to help me decide what brand and models to consider. I've been looking at Canon Speedlight 420EX, 580EX and 540EZ but if there is a less costly but comparable (performance wise) flash out there I'd appreciate your input. Also, what exactly is the differance between EX and EZ flash units?

Cheers.
Mike

Ez units do not meter on the D-reb. Your options are really only the 420 or the 580. The 420 isn't a bad place to start since if can be controlled remotly by the 580 if you ever feel like spending the mad cash.

580 obviously has more power (1 stop i believe) the ability to control other flashes and has a macro tilt feature (I believe.)

The real question is what are you planning on using it for and how much money do you want/ willing to spend.

Do not get any of the ez series.

take a look at a used 550ex flash too.

the key is to get that flash off the camera too, so you should buy the Off Camera Cord 2, from canon also. This will enable you to meter via ETTL and allow for more flash angles too. This will allow you to light parts of the subject, instead of just the whole subject.
