Want to climb an untouched mountain?
We have an expedition to a very difficult and remote island known as Peter I. This is NOT peter Island in the British Virgin Islands, but Peter I, Antarctic. It is a volcano surrounded by a glacier deep inside the Antarctic circle.
A 20 man team is going on a amateur radio expedition and will be on the island for 2 weeks in early February. We will be leaving from either southern Chile or Argentina on a chartered ship with a helicopter on board. The ship is dedicated to this team and will remain off shore.
The mountain has never been climbed. For information about the island and mountain have a look at www.peterone.com and go to the past trip pages for photos. This island has only had a very few landings in history.
We have room for possibly 4 climbers. This is NOT a pleasure cruise to the Antarctic. Its work, danger, and adventure. If you have about 5 weeks to devote and a substantial amount of money please contact George Nicholson at george@nicholsoncontracting.com. Serious inquiries only please.
This is not a trip just being organized but a trip 3 years in the making that already has a ship and helicopter and all gear packed in a shipping container owner by the team ready to sail in January 2006.
We have some major sponsors, a professional videographer, and a skilled team of multinational membership. Its a once in a lifetime change to go where no one has ever been and few will ever see.

how much is a "substantial amount of money"??
This might not be the right forum if that's a requirement, haha.
Wish I had the skill, time AND money to go. But I don't have any of those.

I agree it really sucks that so many things are not possible without large backing ($$$$). Its a damn shame....and not fair...but reality.
I have been waiting 40 years to do this dream...I wanted to go in 1965. Never give up, things have a way of happening maybe late but they happen.

It seems to be nearly entirely devoted to HAM radio operation. Is an actual climb planned, or will the clibmers be just "hitching a rider" withthe expedition?
And, once again, what sia "substantial" amount of money. That used to mean enough money to get to the crag. then to buy a new cam. THen a downpayment for a house. What kind of bucks would a climber need to kick in?

Sounds cool but...how can it be all planned and "all gear packed" and ready to go, yet you don't have the team members :idea: Good luck, sounds like a real adventure.

Ok.......HERE IS THE STORY.............
The cost is approx $15,000.00 per person plus your transportation to and from South America. The ship alone is costing over $350,000.00 add the helicopter with pilot and mechanic, etc, very expensive to get there. There are 20 men on the radio team. We will be doing some meteorological work also.
Try and find anyone that has even seen the mountain?? It can all be verified by looking at the right map sights on the web. Also contact the Norwegian government they have all of the data on this mountain what little there is.
If there is serious interest we have all of the legal documents from the various Governments as well as the contracts from shipping companies and provisioners that will verify the reality of this trip. This is all filed with the State Department and the NSF as well as the Govt of Norway.
Companies like IRIDIUM Sat elite would not be sponsoring us if this was not for real....
We did not plan this as a climbing expedition. It was and is a primary Ham Radio thing. However we have a ship that is large enough to carry a few extra people. We have a few guys that have climbed in the past but we are not a young group and we are not in condition to do something like this mountain. Alos we are committed to provide our sponsors with valuable radio time so we can not devote time to a climb. But we have all of the backup for a climbing team already. Including a rescue helicopted ona ship off shore about 20 miles that is dedicated to us only.
The container is packed with all of the tents, generators, radio equipment, towers, antennas, field hospital ( we have 2 doctors on the team), etc. The doors will not be sealed and it will not ship until mid October and by then all members personal clothing etc will be stored for the journey. We own the shipping container and it is stored at an associates company storage yard here in Atlanta until it leave for Chile or Argentina pending port the ship chooses next month. Its a big steel walk in ocean shipping container about 60'X10'X10'.
We simply thought that we might offer the chance to get to a place that has only been landed on so few times in history. It cost close to 3/4m to get there in total so it will be many years before anyone goes again.
We are NOT active in the climbing community today and yes we are asking in anyplace we know to ask about anyone interested. I personally was climbing in 1965 and active until 1980. I was one the first in the SE US in 1969 to use a rack and Gibbs Cam (now called ascenders). One of the team did the first radio broadcast from the top of Kilimanjaro last year so we are not totally ignorant. His picture is on several European and and 1 us magazine.
There is nothing questionable about this trip or the mountain...............

To the OP:
Talking to some climbing organizations would help you gain some credibility. Plus, maybe an organization could help sponsor a climber. Talk to the major gear companies - Black Diamond, Metelious, Petzle, etc. Talk to the magazines - Climbing and Rock & Ice. Talk to guiding and mountaineering associations.
You are not likely to generate serious interest with a couple posts here with no history of any kind to establish credibility. If you are serious and have a good plan, the climbing organizations would probably love to talk to you. If you are just half-assing it, you will likely get people killed. I think climbers are a bit skeptical of a major expedition that looks like more of an after-thought. You look like you are just trying to take $60,000 off of your end of the bill by filling a couple of extra billets.

Peter I Island is an inactive volvano. The entire island is now a glacier at this stage in its existence. There is very little rock exposed on some overhang areas of the mtn.

My pocket PC and I are traveling. Spelling etc is lacking. Sorry.
As for the credibility. We have that. Not in your community but ours and in our individual professional lives. Like I stated IRIDIUM, Coleman USA, HILTI, ICOM, etc would not be sponsoring us if we were not a credibility expedition. Nor would the National Science Foundation and the State Department have issues us the landing permits required.
I have also discussed this mountain with the owners of Bluewater who I personally know. So we are not relying on these post. It was a bad late night decision on my part as I now see.
I had assumed some intelligent, skilled with credentials, and interested parties might read post here.
I am obviously not in a group that has people that are capable of this type of expedition.
Thanks for the good suggestions and comments.

There are a few intelligent, skilled, interested parties on this site. Unfortunately, most of them rarely post. This is more of a place to go if you want to ask what sort of rope color is safest, or which belay device is the best for getting laid.

Hi George, don`t go beating up on yourself or us for that matter. Yes you did come to the right place. Yes we are a little skeptical around here and with good reason due to experiences in the past. Now that you have put the info out there people will use their own good judgement to exercise their rights and prudence to determine whether they wish to pursue this further with you.
