who has anyone rented boats from at Summersville lake? I'm looking to go in a couple of weekends. I called Sarges and they're expensive. There's also a place down the road for alot cheaper. Any experience with either of these.

A friend looked into this a month or two ago and we came to the conclusion that it's just too damned expensive. Aaaaannnnd, the place we checked requires renters to transport boats to the lake themselves. Ugh! I don't remember the name of the place, but it was $180 for 8 measley hours. What was the cheaper place you found? To be honest, we've been considering building our own party barge/belay boat. The plans we drew up are kinda cool. The design would allow us to separate one big motorized barge into two half-sized motorized barges. We just need to get off our asses and finish it. I mean start it.

The place i was talking about is the $180 place, from 9am to 6pm. Sarges was $250 for 7:30 am to 7:30 pm. I asked teh cheaper place what the deal was in the price diff. They said it was cause their boats were older and not as good of a location. But it almost seemed worth the extra for the extra time and nicer boats. If we have to tow the cheaper boats, that'll be an extra hour spent dicking around getting it in and out of the water. I was just wondering if anyone had personal experience with any of the companies down there.

Sorry, bro. Wish I could help. I'll let you know if I find out anything. FWIW, if we get ours built, we'll rent it to you much cheaper.

I went down to Summersville Lake this past weekend and had an awesome time. My buddy and I did some sport as well as some deep water soloing. I don't think we would've had anywhere near as good a time as we did without a boat rental. I strongly suggest it. A boat makes you soo flexible. Some deep water here, some sport there...oo, some trad back over here. The best deal I found was the Summersville Lake Marina (304-872-1331) down near the Dive Shop. We had two people rent a "John Boat" and later picked up another two for a total of four in the boat. They say three people is the max, but the boat capacity says four. Anyway, John Boat rentals there are a flat $100 for a full day (0900-1930). They also rent pontoon boats for some outrageous $250 per day. No need for that. If you do have more than four, rent a pontoon boat at West Virginia Watersports just a mile closer to Rt. 19. The rent is $180 for 8 or 10 hours. Note that you must transport the boat. They do, however, provide the trailor for transport. Either way, Summersville was wicked awesome.

Is there any new good info/updates on boat rental. I rented from Sarges last year and it was quite cool. This year they said no climbing gear. Is this to cover their backs incase someone gets hurt, or will they really inforce it? Anyone done it this year yet?

Try West Virginia Water Sport's: 304-872-6907. Rented pontoon boats from them last year, about $180 per boat plus boat ramp fee and fuel (an extra $20 or so if I remember right). Haven't been to Summersville this year yet.

Does anyone know what the new number for West Virginia watersports is? Also, when does the lake start to refill? Thanks

they flood the lake around mid april, but the water's cold as hell for the first month or so depending on the weather. somebody above said $180 was expensive for "8 measley hours"...if you can DWS for 8 hours from a pontoon boat and not be exhausted, then you should probably warm up with an ironman triathlon before going out because you're way past machine status

WV Watersports was the best place around. $180 was the cheapest price and they didn't mind renting to climbers. Next time I'm up toward the Lake, I'll drop in and see if they're still open. If you rent from the Marina folk, don't tell them you're going climbing.

rented one from the marina last summer. one being an expensive pontoon boat. but we had like twelve people, and it only came out to like $25-30 each. then there are plenty of people to take "shifts" and you can climb for a while, then sit back and watch others while you rest. worked out pretty well for us, except for the dog throwing up in the boat.

WV waterpsorts has the cheapest pontoon boats, but you need a truck to haul them to lake. It's only like 1/2 mile. John boats are good if you don't have a lot of people. No shade though. If you're a tru dirtbag, you can just go to Whipporwill and DWS without renting a boat. I woudl recommend taking a canoe in there. If I remember correctly the approach is easy and short enough that carrying a canoe down wouldn't be a problem.

Bad news about deep water soling. The U.S Army Corps of Engineers has banned diving from cliffs at 7 WV lakes including Summersville. Here is the link. http://www.herald-dispatch.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070526/NEWS01/705260316/1001/NEWS10

i dunno... "Im climbing, not cliff diving! Its only cliff diving if i fall, so maybe you should stop bothering me!" Just sooo frustrating because i was sooo psyched to go this summer, i wan planning it for a while now. Are there enough of us that want the lakes reopened?

I dont think they realize there is a difference between dumbasses cliff diving and climbers working problems and then falling into the water... the world just doesnt understand us...

Like the others said, there is plenty of DWS that can be done without a boat. Another option is to rent a canoe or kayak. Last time I was there a buddy of mine and I rented a two man sit on top kayak. I think the total cost was about $40 for the whole day.

I dont think the question is of needing a boat. It really falls into the fact that cliff diving, and falling in a DWS situation, are pretty much identical activities. There must be atleast one registered Rockclimbing.com user who is a member of the Corps of Engineers, who can shed some light on this for us.
