Last spring I allowed my 9-year-old son to belay me on an easy sport climb, we had practiced several times on the flat ground beforehand. I felt confident in his ability to belay me, I set everything up much the same way you are describing. The only suggestion I have for you is make sure you have simply commands, that are different than standard commands, in which she knows that it is you who have told her to take you off belay and not someone else on a nearby climb. Also no matter how good of a climber you are you have to think of what could happen if you were to fall will she be able to handle the thought that she may be responsible....

My daughter (about 1/3 my weight) has belayed me on top rope since she was 9 using an ATC. Never had a problem yet. I am actually more comfortable with her belaying me than some older people. It all comes down to maturity and ability. She stays focused and understands the importance of the job.

I would take and experienced third party. You don't want your daughter to grow up answering the question, "How did your dad die?" Gri Gri is a good idea so that if she freaks when you pull her of the ground and the anchor pulls taught the device will do all the catching.

My 7 year old brother has caught me on a couple story-worthy bails using an ATC. I originally started him on an ATC backed up with a prusik. He just lead his first 5.8 trad lead a couple months back. Cool kid. Just make sure your daughter is focused and I think the gri-gri is a good idea. Good luck with your prodigy =). ~Stoney

I hope she's anchored to a rock, as I'd imagine she isn't equal in weight with you.

My brother's daughter just became the youngest certified belayer for all of the Touchstone Gyms (NorCal) at 6. She rocks and has climbed Amazing Face 10a at Diablo (on TR). I'd trust her belaying me more than a lot of people I see.

My little brother caught TR falls from me at 11 YO. At 13 he caught lead falls. He's light so I tie his butt to the ground.

I saw (insert famous writer/climber, I'm not saying who) take intentional lead falls with his little daughter belaying. She had to be 8, she was tiny. She was belaying off a ground anchor, not off her waist at all. She didn't drop him.

My daughter has been belaying me first indoors and then out since she was 11. And yes, she dropped me twenty feet once on a fall indoors when she was learning to use a gri gri. The first time she has to take you on a fall will be the test. My daughter just froze with the handle of the gri gri open and finally just let go of everything. Not pleasant for me but I stopped about 8 feet from the deck so no damage. And she's a very confident young lady (17 now and my favorite climbing partner). I'm not clear from your post whether or not she's belayed indoors or not. That's where I'd start. Only you know your daughter - my gut says 8 is just too young to handle any weird stuff that might come up. And I definitely wouldn't have an 8 year old belay me on lead - I don't care who they are.

I've been working with my son (12 yrs old) on belaying technique (in the gym and outside) with an atc. My only reccomendations (other than using a gri-gri,[which we have switched to] since I feel things happen to fast with the atc if there is a problem) is that you make sure to anchor her well, and for the first few outings have someone back her up with a firemans belay. My son was a little suprised at how the direction of the force was different from the gym the first time outside even though we had discussed it and taken practice falls. I was glad my wife was backing him up, made both of us feel more secure. I'd stay with top roping for a while, till everyone is comfortable. Also, consider the effect on her if for some unforseen (of course) reason you do get hurt while she is belaying. It is easy for most adults to understand that it was the climbers choice to take chances, but at eight, seeing someone you love get hurt...

My daughter here is 8. Her brother (climbing) has belayed her. The guys in the photo also let the kids belay them.

I'd rather be belayed by my daughter then my son. He just expects things to turn out for the best in the long run, with no effort on his part.

and I ROUTINELY teach gaggles (groups? herds?) of 8-60 year olds how to belay, and it takes 5 minutes.

My 8 yr old, as seen above, says that if you are climbing while you are teaching belaying, there is a problem: know one is by your 8 year old to make sure they are doing it right.

You can't climb, and teach belaying at the same time.
