Hey all you NC climbers, doin a little research for grad school
Where would you like to see a new gym pop up in NC?

Well, let's see, we have gyms in Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, Durham, Wilksboro, but not WINSTON-SALEM! We have a small but motivated scene here in Winston but aside from a couple home walls there is no poor-weather indoor climbing. Of course we have a lifetime of climbing a half hour away but......
There is plenty of potential space in the downtown area and occasional whispers of some sort of co-op type arrangement have been heard but so far nothing has really materialized.
Grad student right? MBA? Investment possibilities? Bring it on!!!

Wilmington..
The closest gym for us East Coasters is in Fayetteville and for that drive I usually just drive to Moores anyway. Winston already has some of the best cragging in the state. Hook us up!

Winston-Salem definitely should have a gym. As previously stated, downtown would be an excellent place to open a gym. I have heard several folks in the area ask the question of why there isn't one here. Does anyone know why the old gym that used to be here closed? I would assume that it wasn't due to a lack of customers, but I could be wrong.

Winston-Salem has a very active and growing climbing scene... lots of jobs, a couple of colleges, and a bunch of nearby crags and boulders. Oddly enough there is no gym and folks regularly drive to Wilkesboro to climb indoors!?

Yeah I would have said Winston too. But I'm sure the other gym didn't make it for two reason. Awesome Greensboro gym less than 30 minutes away, and classic climbing less than 30 minutes away. I'd try the coast if I was thinking of this and probably a college town- Wilmington, as already stated.

Winston is a good vote. However I believe that a good gym in WNC such as Asheville (Boone is also good, but the N. Wilkesboro location is pretty close by) would be a good investment. Yeah I know that there is tons of REAL rock here but... there is also an overabundance of piss poor weather here also. Lots of climbers drive along ways to climb on these crags only to find it raining (I know its hard to imagine rain in this tropical environment) when they arrive. What better time and opportunity for someone to do great buisness on a good gym!

Thanks guys, didn't expect such a good response. The other gym in Winston closed because the owners got divorced. Or more accurately, the owner was renting the building from his wife and she left him. Don't know this for sure, but thats what I have been told. Keep the posts coming, this is great info.

Winston-Salem seems like a good choice. The old gym was on the way to the crags. Seemed kind of out of the way for most of W-S (although I could be wrong). For someone actually considering starting a gym I'd recommend a more central location.

not Winston. they already have the best quick outdoor cragging and bouldering available plus a pretty good gym like 1/2 an hour away. I'd suggest somewhere between Durham and Raleigh as both those gyms really kind of suck. there is a large contingent of climbers here that have been grumbling for years that we need a good real gym with bouldering and everything. PLEASE

As if you piedmont gym rats don't have enough to climb. You would say the next gym goes in your area also? Try living 6 hours away from the nearest rock that is larger than a pebble. My vote goes for the beach. Of course my selfish preference is on the Outer Banks. Plenty of tourist revenue.

After recently moving to Greensboro from living in Boone for 5 years, and doing a lot of travel in NC, I'd have to say Wilmington would be the best bet. Yes, Asheville or Boone would probably love to get a gym with all the rain during the summer, but there are those great sunny days. Greensboro seems to get the people from Winston, and Raleigh/Durham have gyms, even though they aren't great. The coast has nothing but an untapped market of young active people. Just my two cents.

I second this comment. I am moving from MD to Durham tomorrow(10/1) and I feel like I have been spoiled for so long. All gyms should be modeled after http://www.earthtreksclimbing.com. over 15,000sft of climbing. I have climbed at raleighs local gym and I am not sure if I would go back. Looks like alot of trips to Moores or Boone.

alright being from pine hall(walnut cove basically) i would have to say somewhere in/near winston, but i guess highpoint, ashville, or durham wouldnt be that bad to drive to either if the gym was good. Greensboro has tumblebess which is pretty nice spot on rainey days but the 30min commute just gets old if u make it alot.
But then again Wins. has Mount Airy, Pilot Mtn., and boulders not a stone throw away, it just "seems" that theres a larger climbing communtiy here.
In truth though since im moving to boone id like to see a nice boulder gym around there, but that'll never happen
another ques. for those living in Boone, im moving up this spring to go to App state and wanted a house close enough to go where i can ride my bike, any suggestions? Can't wait to see what this place is like, heard its almost like athens ga, just with climbers

Rent is a little more if you want to be able to walk/ride your bike to campus, but I'd recommend looking in ads for places on Howard St. and Oak St. They are mainly students, with quite a few decent houses, and Howard St. is about as close as you can get to campus. If you want a yard, check Oak St. www.mountaintimes.com and www.wataugademocrat.com are the 2 main newspapers. Hope it helps, I'm jealous. Also, if you decide to live out of town, check out The River House in Foscoe. Giant log cabin turned into apartments with a huge backyard on the river. By far the coolest place I saw when I was up there, and had the good fortune to live there.

Winston-Salem has a good supply of old buildings with enough space to house a well designed gym. If I were choosing location, I'd put it close to downtown and near the I40/Hwy52 intersection. The Sixth and Trade area has a couple of buildings with high ceilings and open space that would facilitate a climbing gym. Plus, after a good session, patrons could then walk to the pubs.

I hear what you're saying about quality climbing, but there's little chance that any location in NC, including Charlotte, can support a facility that big. Inner Peaks cost a little over a half million to build -- IMO that's right at the threshold for Charlotte. A 10,000 square foot gym would collapse under its own financial weight.

I have to back up and say that the bouldering gym in Raleigh is quite good for what it is, a nice little bouldering gym with quality route-setting.

So the popular opinion is Winston... checked the town out this weekend on my way home from Pilot. Never been in the downtown district. Seems like a nice place. Thanks again for the info. If anybody else has their .02 to add, Im all ears

If there isn't one in Boone, there needs to be. There are tons of rocks, but it is always raining. This leaves lots of climbers with nowhere to go. A good gym would be great in Boone.
