This is a friendly public service announcement reminding all you slackers to watch where you land.
A friend of mine landed on a small stump next to some bushes and cut his foot pretty badly. The whole ball of his foot was basically a big flap of tissue. :shock:
A couple hours of cleaning little pieces of bark out of the wound and 16 stitches later, we took him home. I watched the whole thing and realized that I could NEVER be a doctor. Disgusting. However, it was interesting to get to see the tendon on the inside of his foot.
Wish I had taken some pictures...
So... the morale of this story is to be careful and clear your landing area.

Sorry to hear about your friend. Ihope he heels quickly . .. HOWEVER, please do not promote "clearing your landing area" . .. this is not a universally accepted ethic. Instead, may I suggest that you take note of your landing area, and if there is potential for injury, be sure to have a spotter!?!?!

Uh.... ethic?? I'm not talking about doing wholesale landscaping in a national park or something like that.
My line is in my backyard, so there's not much to worry about, but I'd assume people have the sense not to dig up someone else's (or the government's) property. Is it really necessary to explain that?

easy there iltripp, i don't think leaverbiner noted that this was posted in slacklining.
a lot of people would be very upset about promoting the clearling a landing are for a boulder problem.

I definetly clear the ground where I slackline- my house is surrounded by red pine trees with big sharp pinecones. I always sweep the ground and remove pointy objects before ever stepping on the line.
Also a good thing to point out would be that in public parks:
Thoroughly check the ground for broken glass. Almost sliced my foot open real nice once because I didn't see a tiny piece hidden in the leaves.
Damn kids breaking bottles at the park!

an easy fix for roots is using your sandal. There is a wicked root that sticks out just a snip where I slackline... Its not big, but if you land on it you are in serious pain.
Flip the sandal over and put in on there... it doesn't have to cover the thing completely, but by landing on the rubber/foam of a sandal, it disperses the fall much better (and makes you want to avoid landing on the sandal because you can see it)

Just wear shoes, and you won't have to worry about cutting your foot. However, I was slacking in the parking lot of my apartment building, and I fell off and hit a pole. I hit that thing pretty freekin' hard, now my back hurts.
