I'm pretty sure that I am being silly even asking this but my partner and I have the same type of draws so to tell the difference I put a thin strip of black duct tape around base of the spine of the biner that clips to the bolt. Is there are possible damage this could do to the biner?

Taping 'biners is on somewhat like marking ropes with a Sharpie,
and, in addition to the suspicion of microfratures (one should regularly
remove the tape to check), it usually leads to long pointless threads.
To that end, ...

Just think about it for a minute...If the adhesive on duct tape could cause damage to metal carabiners why would anyone use it to repair metal air ducts?

Little Know Fact: Different metals react differently with DUCT tape. THe metal in Air DUCTS were designed specifically for their use as a heating/cooling apparatus and to be used with DUCT tape. At first they tried steel, but not only did it cause many hernias it was also pain to work with. (Have you ever tried cutting in a 6" collar into a 1/4" steel trunk line?) The duct tape didn't bond well with the steel, nor the zinc, or other alloys that they tried. They finally found that tin adhered best to duct tape and no microfractures were caused. Thus people who install these Duct systems are referred to as TIN KNOCKERS and are always seen with several rolls of Duct tape in there tool boxes.
So remember kiddies, read the label on the tape and make sure that the metal is compatible with it in order to advoid microfractures.
Oh, by the way, I have a bridge to sell if anyone is interested!

Just tape the gosh darn things. I use wide pinstripe tape from the auto parts store. You can get lots of colors - even two-different colors to really be different. Duct tape is nasty because it makes things sticky if you take it off.
I can imagine people bitching about tape being soo heavy it adds to the weight of their super-light biners. For them I am more than happy to take any unmarked biners I find :)

I bought a roll of that medical tape from the gear store I frequent and I put that on all my biners and then initialed all of them with a sharpie. maybe the medical tape will allow the micro-fractures caused by the sharpie to heal!!

I was belaying one day as a couple came up to us and begin the climb near us. When my partner had anchored in I turned around to get my climbing shoe's and oh. . . I had to ask "Do you use green medical tape to mark your gear?" The answer was yes. So we just put a little more distance between "our gear" and "there gear."
Matching tape makes a good conversation piece.

....seriously though, everyone should be able to recognise their own gear.... even down to the carabiner.... as true climbers you should be playing with it at home every waking hour, sorting it, re-sorting it.... you should know each piece and what it's been through.... Sure, every orange alien is an orange alien, BUT no two aliens are the same.... except maybe off the showroom floor....

Yes, I do.
Actually, the reason I asked the guy above, was because he had put his gear very close to ours. He had acres to lay his gear down. It was because I recognized that it was not my gear, that I then saw the tape, and had to laugh- because my climbing partner always marked his gear, even after laughing at me for labeling my food so my roommates wouldn't eat it, and now, his tape technique was pointless- but I still knew the answer ("My gear" and "my partner's gear" means also "our gear").
I asked the guy above to point out the irony. He got it, my partner got it. His partner and I just gave each other an "understanding" look.
