Nope, this isn't even about content this time...

For months now, on the occasion I do come here, this site has been HORRIBLE!!!! Taking minutes to load each page at times! This is true when accessing from multiple locations, different computers, etc. It's also true of each page on the site...

What gives? For example, right now it just took about 5 minutes, to login, go to the forums page and open up a page for a new post... All the while I was able to view other sites in a different browser window, which were loading fine. Sad! Really sad, man....

i see this a bit too
database issues perhaps ? network congestion at the isp ? not enough iron on the back end ?
I kicked my 20 bucks down last time it got real bad, I'm willing to bet it's a resource issue when they have all these users and not enough time/money/people to manage the site...
ymmv...

when i see it drag it seems to be restricted to rc.com - i'll hit a bunch of other sites just to see if it is the network, and never get the same hang...

Could be your computer or it could be the time you log into the site. Lots of times if there are alot of people in the site the site will go slower. When I have difficulty loading the site or any site, I have found that if I close the browser and open a new window it speeds up the process. Just a suggestion. :) P

To add a few more things...

First, being a network engineer, working on a T1, direct to desk, backed up by a 3.0mb DSL circuit, I'm willing to wager it's not a line problem. Especially when it only affects this one, single site.

I'm certain that I agree with paganmonkeyboy. It's site related, either to RC's database or ISP-related/bandwidth issues for them. I just wanted to get it out there and stir it up a bit, as it's frustrating as hell!

The last hour, as I've come back and forth, it's been *really* hit and miss. One minute it's takin' minutes to load a page, the next, it's crankin' right along like a legitimate site!

Cheers!

I have noticed the same problems... And haven't complained about it because I am grateful that I am allowed to use this site for free. Now, if I was a paying customer, I might make some noise, but I'm not.

Good atitude! People shouldn't take RC.com for granted!

Hmmm... I'd disagree with that attitude, actually. MOST forums are free. The forums that do charge are typicllay only charging for things that directly affect their cost. Things such as hosting of photos. Users choosing not to use those services can join and post for free, etc... Even then, most forums do not charge.

If RC presumes that they can start charging people, this site would become defunct soon thereafter. There are other climbing forums, which work remarkably well, that are just as, if not more, popular. As incredibly easy as it is, these days, to create and run a forum, I don't really see it as our *privelage* to be here. There are too many alternatives.

Perhaps you should just go enjoy some of them?

The way I see it, unless you're working on the site to help improve the problems you complain about, you have no place to complain. Not part of the solution?... Fuck off.

Sorry if you're offended, I just can't stand it when people sit around and criticize rather than becoming an active part of fixing the problems they PERSONALLY have with the site.

I agree with the OPer. I've never seen the extremely long load times that I get with RC.com on any other websites. There's clearly something wrong here.

I bet if everyone who thinks the site is too slow and has major problems donated 10 minutes worth of their time and/or money to make it better, or just stopped logging on and posting, it would be plenty fast.

The reason it's snappy at night is that the load is vastly reduced. We do a large multiple of the number of hits that most other sites in our market, put together, do in a day. As in, getting ever closer to a million hits per day.

We do this on two 1999-vintage webservers and a fairly decent database server which, unfortunately, runs MySQL. And on top of MySQL runs phpBB, which is not the most efficient forum software ever created. Until very recently it was destined to stay this way because the titular owner of the site was working 100 hours a week at his new startup, but remained uninterested in converting the business to an LLC, so capital expenditures were limited to what people paid for Supporting Partnerships. That, unfortunately, is not sufficient to scale out our hardware enough to match our loads. And I was unwilling to throw my money away, or ask anyone else to do so, in the support of someone else's for-profit venture.

Since the owners of Dropzone invested in the site, I have been working with their technical guy to figure out how best to speed things up and consolidate the infrastructure. If all goes well, we may begin to migrate by the end of the year. Dropzone's machines are faster, more numerous, and better connected than ours (just visit the site if you want to compare: http://www.dropzone.com/), so the logical course of action is to use them and add our one modern server into the mix. If you want to influence the migration, take a look at Dropzone's forum software, and compile a list of differences between its functionality and ours. Then post up if there are any differences that you feel are showstoppers.

Our infrastructure problems have been ongoing because the site has remained very popular in spite of them. I'm not thrilled about the situation either, but there does now appear to be a light at the end of the tunnel. Meanwhile, some of the best climbing photographers on the planet routinely submit shots (free) for the front page, John Long and Chris McNamara put up TR's, and the rambling wreck continues to putter along.

I'm not sure whether to be proud of this, or horrified...
