I suppose that this is sort of off topic, but I'm looking into some small (and affordable) mountain towns in CO, Wyoming, Utha, and Idaho. I'd like to ski-bum it for a single year before going to college at Western State in Gunnison. I've been thinking about Nederland, Ketchum,Silverton, Ouray... I'm just looking for lots of snow and Back Country options and of course good mountain culture.

Why don't you really go for it, take your USD and stretch them out in some little town in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.. just a thought

You obviously haven't seen what the exchange rate is like these days.

That there is Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Just kidding that is Banff, Alberta twenty or thirty minutes in either direction will get you to Canmore or Lake Louise.

One option might be Driggs, ID.
It's small (maybe too small), not sure how affordable or how much 'mountain culture'.
It is, however, at the foot of the Tetons (on the pretty side), 15 minutes from Grand Targhee, not too far to Teton pass (psuedo-backcountry, in the sense that it's pretty easy to shuttle runs, not in the avy sense), and not much further than that to Jackson Hole.

ps. what exactly is 'mountain culture'? The two towns i've been to that felt like they had some sort of distinct 'culture' were Park City and Jackson Hole, but I thought that was 'tourist trap culture'.

To quote Douglas Coupland:

In reply to:
A large part of insert mountain culture town here's social texture comes from its labour pool, which shifts with the seasons. It's highly transient and almost entirely youthful, largely fuelled by Eastern Canadians, Australians and New Zealanders harbouring (it really must be said) outdoorsy fantasies of consequence-free sex, drugs and insert favourite outdoor sport here.

Leavenworth is so expensive...nobody could "bum" it there. Plus there is much better skiing elsewhere in the state. While I love the Pow at Mission, there's never much of it, and those damned double chairs take waaaaay too long. Stevens is close too, and better than Mission, I think (I live closer to Stevens). If you really wanted to ski at Stevens, though, Leavenworth would be about the most expensive place in the proximity.

k so i've lived in quite a few places and a couple years ago i lived in boise, id, it was pretty tight...not exactly your amazing mtn town but affordable and your like four hours away from great skiing in any direction... plus the local hill, bogus basin isn't too shabby. plus there's climbing everywhere. living in the north end part of it is tight, you can get an apartment for not too bad and live amongst a bunch of climbers/other people. telluride, co is also really sweet although paying to live ther is a bitch. skiings great tho.

what about the "sisters" in oregon?

good snow (not as wet as wash and mont), good climbing at smith, desert biking when you cant get into the pines, smallish, but Bend is close and not as pricey as Park City or Silverton.

Exactly what I was thinking. Maybe in the Alps, but the US or Canada? Forget it, unless culture=tourists, shit-kickers who hate you, and latte-sipping yuppies in 4-runners constitutes "culture."

Why don't you just head to school? Gunnison is a good location, and trust me, you will have PLENTY of time to ski, climb, and jerk-off your first year of school as you'll likely be taking just gen eds. But, if you've got some money laying around, taking a year off is a fine idea. I'm no skiier, so I can't give you much help there, but if you want a cheap area with good climbing look into the smaller towns of NW Wyoming.

I'm kind of thinking that going to school in Wasted State IS ski-bumming it! You'll have years of it, not just one year.
