In this thread, many people said they would not watch a comp video because it would be boring. But nobody said why.

Even though we all love climbing, reading about climbing, looking at still pictures of climbing in the mags and on this very site, and basically living eating and breathing climbing... it seems as though many climbers don't like to watch climbing in action??

Why is this?

Just curious

I don't find watching climbing to be boring. I love bouldering. I think about it hourly, sometimes more. If I have the opportunity I will watch it. On cold early mornings during the winter months I throw on a bouldering video to play in the background while I try to wake up and eat breakfast before a day of climbing. Get's me excited and ready to go.

I like to watch people climbing, but only if they're doing the type of climbing that appeals to me. That thread was about comps, which don't really rock my boat. I would pay to see footage of a big expedition, or someone doing some sick ice out in the middle of nowhere, or things of that nature. But even then I wouldn't want to see a moment-by-moment of the whole thing.

Because watching it is boring. What more can you say. Just like baseball. I'd rather play (like Eric said {canjunclimber}). Besides, to me, comps are stupid. No one is allowed to get mad at that, its my opinion. To me comps are nothing but what climbing doesn't need more of. Commercialism.

Climbing is boring to watch because it is a relatively slow moving sport (watch hockey). Climbing is a pesronal experience. Have you ever lowered a partner and they're completely freaked out feeling they were on the very edge and to you it just looked like every pitch you've belayed. Just another climb. Pulling sick moves just doesn't translate to film. Pulling on off angle, sloping micro edges looks fairly similar to pulling descent size holds on film.
Climbing is 90% or more mental! How can that be filmed?
I opt to withold my view on comps at this time

I like watching climbing... Especially when it involves watching someone that flows!
It is very graceful and entertaining. It also helps in understanding the movement aspect of climbing better - seeing someone else do it.

Come on..

Is Watching Climbing more boring than say... Watching Fishing, Bowling, or Womens Basketball? If they get Primetime so should we.

If you give them the meal on a beautiful plate they will eat anything. Our society has evolved to a certain degree that demands action and high paced Media. If you watch ESPN in other countries T.V. is boring. But they don't complain. They don't think it's boring. We Do because we are Jaded to it. Why do you think Soccer is so big everywhere but here.

My point is.. Someday within the next ten - fifteen year you will see climbing take off just like Skateboarding did. There will be 3 and 4 times the number of artificial facilities available to the common climber than there is today. This is inevitable.. Alot of the old school will condemn this but the response will overwhelm them and outdate them. It happens it's life... Fortunately CLimbing outdoors will not be as glorified as it is now and that will change the soul of the experience all together. But you will live to see 5.19 I promise..

So my question to you is Do you want in or Do you want out?

I know you may not want to believe this but some of you will and all of you will live to see it happen.

Have a great Climbing Day
JBone

I watch the climbing shows on OLN. I'm looking more at the route and working it out in my mind then actually watching the climber. If they are really good, I watch them to see how they do the moves and try to pick up tips. It's not as good as watching people climb routes that you have climbed or having trouble on to pick up some beta, but I don't think it's boring.

Most of my friends compare watching climbing to watching golf. I enjoy it because I am obsessed with it. My roommates grumble whenever I put my videos on at home. I suppose it is slow moving and not as action packed as football or hockey.

Way to get your rant on there, J-Bone

Like I've said, I like watching climbing myself. Quite simply, it's a fantasy to watch super-strong climbers and imagine myself like them someday. 'Sides, I don't like watching sports or games that go by TOO fast, I can't keep up!

i like watching snowboarding . tht is fun, climbing i guess is ok, but it's pretty slow, and you always wish it were you. to watch snowboarding, like teton gravity research videos, it gives you INSPIRATION and stuff, to go out into the WORLD and do it!!!(romeo and juliet hand movements and diction**) yes.

Not to mention, it is on plastic, which sucks. It isn't even real climbing. Maybe I'd tune in back and forth between the climbing and Antiques Roadshow if it was a speed ascent of "The Nose" or something. Still, it would be boring. Just not as boring as indoor climbing.

I lived in Scotland for 6 months and one Saturday moring when I was flipping through the channels I found a show about climbing. Basically it had 4 climbers and they were challenged to climb small buildings. Not a formal competition just like a game show type thing... got points for speed, style, etc. Like they had to climb the back of a gas-station, stuff like that. Unfortunately I wasn't into climbing at the time so I didn't pay any attention about the show itself or who the climbers were... but loved the show nonetheless. Wish they had something like that over here in the US.

I love watching climbing. Sometimes my palms even get damp just from watching. An association reaction for sure. Kind of a like the whole dog salivating to the ringing of a dinner bell. I'm always checking climbxmedia.com to see if there's a new clip. Apparently Sharma won again at the recent PCA comp (big surprise) can't wait to see the highlight reel.

Well It depends if you are watching in real life or on a video. I Real life you can guide them a little. And joke about them while thier on the face. So watching climbing in that sence would be fun. I know a girl who came to just watch us climb and did not try it. So if a non-climber would come just to watch then why not the real climbers. But the deal with videos are that if they are real climbing or holywoods depiction. This gives you the chance to show your knowledge of climbing and joke about thier skills and about their racks.

See you on the rocks, but not in a video

I love to watch people climb, as long as I can climb immediately afterwards. I hate just having to sit and watch someone for a while (also known as belaying). As long as my turn is coming up, I'm cool with belaying. If I climb first, I can only think of what I'm going to climb next.
