Hi All
I am starting the process of organizing a benefit for the earthquake victims in Kashmir/Pakistan. I've contacted the owner of the Front here in SLC, and he is willing to let me use the gym for the benefit, but I am not sure if it wouldn't make more money at a bar or something.

I am thinking a band or 2, some 'name' climbers hanging out, maybe a slide show/demo of some sort, approaching BD, IME, REI etc and asking either for matching donations or door prizes for a raffle. I am open to other ideas as well.

I'm looking for input.
( - edited to add - )
How many people in SLC might be interested in paying 10-15 bucks to climb at the Front for a night, live music, slide show or demo, and some prizes ? If you don't have a membership you pay 10 or 15 anyway, right ? Does that seem reasonable ?

I am also looking for people that might want to help - watch things during the actual benefit, talk to bands, climbers, companies, etc - basically there is a lot of work involved and I am going to need some help to pull this one off. Anyone with a contact (IE Dude - I can talk to Sharma for ya ;)... ) would be *Greatly* appreciated.

Anyone interested please PM me or post here...I would like to get this going sooner than later...

Thanks

-Tomhttp://

Things that would make me most likely to go:
Slideshow/movie screening
raffle
climbing (gee, i haven't climbed indoors since april at least...)

Live music doesn't really hurt, but if it's supposed to be the main draw, a bar would probably be a better place.

$10-15 seems reasonable to me, esp. not having a membership.

One thing that wouldn't hurt, in my mind, would be to have an organization lined up/advertised who the proceeds will be going to - tends to lend an air of legitmacy to things like this. (Not that I don't trust ya...)

somebody asked for more details so :
timeframe ? - weeknight or weekend in the next three - four weeks, depending on what the interest is. I'm thinking a saturday afternoon/eve might be good, but will need to confirm with the gym

aid going to ? - doctors without borders, or maybe get a wholesale deal on equipment that these people are going to need to survive a winter (tents, sleeping bags, fuel) and get it over there and distributed - still need to get more details on that.

50 people would be 500 bucks. That's not a lot, but more than I can give myself...

thanks again

agreed, and I'm in the process of getting all that hammered out...;) I only thought of this yesterday, so gimmee a minute...

edited to add - I have heard a few things about the relief effort, and want to make sure whatever we are sending money towards is something that is actually helping people, so I will want to do a little research...

More details as they develop :

Date : Dec 10th Saturday from 6-9 or 10 ?
Prolly be something like 10-15 to come and climb, 5 donation if you are a member

Giveaways from equipment shops, the Beer Nut, more to come...

Still havent' gotten a keynote speaker/slideshow, but we are working on it

Money donated to go to Doctors without Borders - they have a huge relief effort going over there right now

also - The American Alpine Club in Golden has told me they will take (almost) any equipment people want to donate - sleeping bags, tents, winter clothes - some stipulations apply so make sure its useable if you want to donate it in lieu of paying a donation to climb. Their website says they won't take anything after Nov 18th, but I've talked with them and they should be able to get anything we donate over there and distributed, even if we are a little late.

(Anyone not in SLC - the North Face is doing this as well - just get them your donated gear 18th through 23rd, maybe save a life with that old tent or something...)

I'd like to try to raise at least 1000 bucks. That's 100 people at 10 apiece (yes, I am a rocket scientist...:D ) Its not much, but at least it is something. Maybe we can find a corporate donor to match funds ?

Any and all help is welcomed, requested, and appreciated...

-Tom

Tom,
I was very surprised and pleased to read that you are trying to raise funds for the earthquake victims in Pakistan. I am a teacher/climber from Austin,Texas currently living in Islamabad, Pakistan. I know the earthquake has all but disappeared from western media, but it remains an urgent human tragedy here. 90,000 dead and 3 million homeless....and thousands more will die in the next few weeks as the Himalayan winter sets in. Everyone in this part of the country knows someone who has perished. Two children who attended the international school where I teach died in the apartment building collapse here in Islamabad. I am joining up with a group called Rescue-Relief-Rehabilitation-Pakistan. It is essentially a small group of local trekkers/climbers/mountain enthusiasts/ compassionate people who haul in food/clothing/supplies to remote Himalayan villages in northern Pakistan. There are no roads....
long days of serious load humping over steep, mountainous terrain. This takes place during the weekends, as these volunteers have day jobs.
Anyway, I just wanted to commend you for your efforts and trying to raise awarness. The inhabitants of these great ranges have suffered so much and it is good to know that there are some compassionate climbers out there who realize the significance. Keep up the good work and please report how it goes. If you are interested, I can give you information about the relief efforts in which I am involved.

I would like to give a shout out to Pete and the people at http://www.westernroadtrips.com, who have stepped up and donated a 3 day weekend rental of a VW Westfalia to the cause.

I'm not sure if this will be (silent) auctioned off, done special as a prize, or how we will give it away, but Many Many Thanks for this :D:D:D

Anyone else ? Pretty please with sugar and a green alien on top ?

If I was in SLC at that time I would be there, but I'm stuck in SD.
Try going to some local papers and TV stations and see if you can get some free advertising, I know around here they all give out a free shout for benefits. Try ur state public broadcasting companies. Give a good heads up to all in your area.
Good luck with your endeavor.

few thoughts:
* I assume you'll have flyers as soon as you've got the details ironed out? I post a stack around the U!

* You might also try contacting the folks at ClimbingSaltLake.com to at least get the word out on their site as well.

* I can help w/ day-of/day-before setup stuff, if needed

New flyers will be forthcoming, as Desert Edge/Red Butte and Wasatch Touring have also donated some door giveaway stuff to the cause. There will be food and drinks, movie, slide show, music, and, of course, climbing !
(no climbing once you've started to have a tasty adult beverage please...)
FIrst 150 members are comped by The Front. Food and drink for 300 on the agenda, so bring a bunch of friends and let's have some fun for the cause please !

Come on down...I just got a special addition to things - A signed copy of Stone Crusade from the man himself - John Sherman ! I'm thinking this and the three day westfalia van rental will be auctioned off and not just given away with all the other stuff, but not sure at this point...
