Often when I climb cracks the rope ends up running through the crack and then getting pinched between my foot and the rock. I often have to pull the rope out of the crack to get it out of the way and it really screws up my rhythm. I'm relatively new to crack climbing and I am wondering if this is just something I'll have to deal with or if there are any techniques for avoiding this problem.

I'm not sure if this will work with cracks, haven't tried it yet but only learnt this recently as away to keep your ankle from catching on the rope. All you do is flick the rope coming from your harness over your knee so it ends up between the top of your hip and thigh. It tends to keep it lifted and out of the way.

Yes and yes. With time you get better at keeping the rope out of your way but depending on the crack (and the pro you place) it can still be an issue. If you can, try and keep the rope out of the crack to begin with (including when you place pro). This includes using your feet to keep shoved off to the side (although be careful not to let the rope run behind your leg).

Sometimes using longer slings will help keep the rope from getting dragged into the crack. Sometimes you just have to reach down and move it or be careful to place your foot so as to avoid pinning the rope. Sometimes, especially in ow's, you need to strategize where you place your gear so as to minimize rope and gear passing issues.

that may keep the rope out of your way, but if you fall you can get tangled up pretty bad.
