So it looks like I'm headed to a conference in Charleston on Feb 13 and 14th (2006), which is a Monday and Tuesday. I'm just wondering if there's anywhere for me to get some climbing in if i head down a day or two early. Looking around the routes DB, it looks like my best bet is to head up to NC, but that's a 4.5 hour drive, and I'm without a partner anyways. Is the weather going to be decent? Is there somewhere I can likely meet up with some easy trad (<5.8)/moderate sport (5.10ish) climbers that time of year? I just don't want to head down early and rent a car and end up with nowhere to climb and nobody to climb with!

So where do you Charleston climbers go on weekends in February??

Go check out Ft. Sumnter and the aircraft carrier and sumbarine. Go to the aquarium. Go eat ribs at sticky fingers (seriously, you absolutely have to go there and get ribs). Hang out at the beach. You could get to Charlotte in four and a half hours and climb at Crowders, or add on another two and a half hours and make it to the Boone area, but unless you're just seriously jonesing to climb in NC, seems like it would be a lot of trouble to climb in NC. Then again, if it's dry and you don't mind a little cold, there's some great climbing to be had. Crowders will have the trad you're looking for (I think all the bolted - and there isn't much - stuff there is pretty steep), and the Winston-Wilkes-Boone type area has anything you're looking for, if you're willing to drive a little longer. Might have a better chance of finding a partner in that area, too.

Thanks for the info.

Looks like I'll be heading down sunday morning and going on some tour (work related) in the afternoon. It looks like I'll be leaving the harness at home, but since I'll be headed to Vegas the following friday for 9 days at Red Rocks, it's not disappointing.

Cheers,

Ian

Walk around downtown. It's pretty cool.

Go enjoy the beach.

Rent a canoe/kayak and do some exploring back in the marshes.
