This is my first experimentation with depth of field in Photoshop. I used lens blur on an area that I selected with the lasso tool. Actually I made two different layers for DOF. One for the road and one for the ledge. Then I blended the edges between layers with the blur and smudge tools.

It still seems like there is too much of an edge between the ledge and the road behind it. Suggestions?

did you feather the edge?
also, make layers but only work on the copy layers, not your base image.

No, I don't know how to use the feathering tool. I should probably look up a tutorial on that. Unfortunately, my 5 month-old Dell crashed (hard drive failure) and they won't do anything for me. I might have just lost all of my pictures. Until I get that up and running, I won't be trying anything.

Ouch!!! Sorry to hear about the crash...ALWAYS Back up your images at least once a month. More if you shoot a lot and edit a lot. DVD's are cheap and the backups will last a few years just in case.
I have a 3 way backup. Primary HD, secondary HD, and once every now and then a DVD backup. THe secondary HD is not left connected to the PC until backup and everything runs off a UPS. Nothing is fool proof but at least when something goes wrong there are a few options for recovery.
This is an issue with digital that gets overlooked too often.
