i may just be a east cost sissy, but has any one else noticed that there is no walking on the "walk offs" in J tree? Seriously, we down climbed a 5.8 chimney on the blob because that was the "walk off." i did not like it very much. lol there were some pretty good walk offs, but most of the ones i did were pretty ruff in my opinion. what do yall think?

Dude. The walk-offs are a little adventurous, yes, but you had to know that was coming when you went to J Tree. Most of the climbs were put 20+ years ago (read:bolts bad, very bad!) What did you think it was going to be like? Personally, I enjoy the adventurous nature of having to figure out the descent It is half of the fun!

didnt feel like doing the short rappel instead?
truth be told, the walkoffs in Jtree are usually more like adventuresome 4th class.
although, the Sentinel has a very nice walk-off if you're in the area- not even a little scrambling. it caught me off guard on our last trip!

I take it you haven't done a lot of climbing out there, cause there's tons of decent walk offs....especially on some of the classic lines
Chalk Up Another One
Pumping Ego
Illusion Dweller
Dappled Mare
Bird on a Wire
Sticher Quits
I'd go on, but what's the point. They're out there. You just have to take the right descent. *Some* walkoffs are hinky, but saying all JT walkoff's suck is way too blanket a statement. Climb there more and you'll find out.

Where would the fun but if the climb just ended at the top and that was it. Having an adventurous "walk off" just keeps the fun going and going... :lol:

i guided my five-year-old daughter up beginner's two on the blob last weekend, and she managed the downclimb just fine. the "5.8" chimney you refer to is easy fourth class. i think maybe you should work on your technique...i remember the first time i downclimbed from the summit of the blob it seemed a tad scary. but the short, 20' chimmney section you refer to is dead easy...you can do it no hands once you understand the concept of sliding your whole body into the slot and simply relaxing your core muscles a bit when you want to let gravity do all the work.
suck it up, junior. it'll all seem like cake in a year or two.

dont get me wrong, i did enjoy the down climbs, quite i bit, and maybe i exagerated the 5.8, lol but we dont have that kinda stuff in the east. we just flat out walk. we have mountains with a bluff on them, not a big rock sitting in the middle of the dessert. lol this was my first time out there. great climbing, just not what i have in the east. but hey, thats why i went there.

Ah yes. the Blob "walk off".
The first time we climbed it, it took a while to figure out how to get down. I kind of wish the topo had at least described where to climb down so we didn't waste so much time pacing around the top like idiots.
The guys who write the topos are sadistic fiends who get satisfaction from being as vague as possible with route descriptions. I'm sure the locals sit out there with a keg of beer and binoculars laughing and mocking us fumbling gumbs.
I respect them for that.

Jtree doesn't generally have walkoffs, usually it has descents. The difference is not obvious, but it is apparent. I never found them to be unusually difficult, and none of them were ever harder than 5.2.

This thread made me laught because I had the very same experience my first trip to JTree. My partner and I had climbed Double Dip under the impression that there was a walk off. Well, there was a very steep, gap-ridden walk-off...covered with snow. Yeah, bad planning on our part. :oops:

area has a very moderate "scramble off"...it's no walk, but it's not sketchy either. however, it's longer than the climbs though, and puts you a little ways from the base of the wall.
