Now, I understand this in situations like competitions, going for records, or avoiding any heinous fall situation outside. But when toproping a 5.10a slab in the gym, is it honestly necessary to expel an excessively determined, bloodcurdling scream upon the successful negotiation of every move?

I yell sometimes, not during "every" move, just the one that was hanging me up that I finally got. And not after pulling it, but more during - I think it helps keep my core muscles tightened.

I tend to suffer loudly if I'm working hard...more of the 'UGGGGGH' and 'RAAHHHH!' varieties than the Xena 'Yee-yee-yee-yee YEE!'. Now, seeing/hearing someone do that while progressing up the wall... would be awesome :D

OK, I have to agree, yelling on every move on a slab climb is probably a call for attention (kind of like yelling a lot on climbs that are well below your climbing limit). That said, I admit to being one of those girls who grunts or "yells" (like 4togo -- not like Xena!) to get that little bit of extra power needed to reach the next hold when I'm at my limit or pumped out of my mind. It's a technique that's commonly used in weight training. And often I don't even realize I'm doing it until afterward (I've actually tried to stop doing it, but haven't been successful yet).

Nothing wrong with a little grunting if it helps your performance! What I gotta stop doing in the gym in talking while I climb - I have a bad habit of keeping up a running commentary along the lines of "... man, this hold sucks ... what color tape is that ... that next hold is really far away ... I wish that one was closer (quit wishing!) ...". I do a lot better when I just breathe deeply and keep my mouth shut! (Although I must admit the talking tends to amuse my belayer.)

LOL... I agree with the need to let it out when you're climbing. And for this girl, it might have been a challenging climb. But it was a packed gym with a kid's birthday party on the adjacent wall, with multiple belay lessons going on as well, and all you could hear in any part of the gym was shriek after shriek. But maybe I'm being unfairly biased, because this girl was also one of those girls who gym-climbs in only a sports bra on top (that maybe shouldn't??) and shorts that are WAY too short to climb in...

I'd hazard a guess that she's after the attention: "see? see? Look at how hard I climb". :D

What's wrong with a little enthusiasm? My advice, find a big rock in the middle of no where and climb it. That way you won't have to deal with screaming fat chicks. Mkay? Yeah, I'm a smartass. Anyway, the men seem to be the louder ones at the gyms that I go to. Noise is to be expected in the gym but if I hear it like that crap outside, I'm moving to another rock.

i'm a guy and i don't see anything wrong with the occasional power grunt, male or female. showboating as an MO is not a virtue---but if it gets you up the rock (or, the plastic too, i guess), then go for it. Just know that if its extreme others will likely be laughing on the inside---and sometimes on the outside. I remember this one guy who was climbing some mild v4 gym problem, and on every move he made a distinctly male-porno-money-shot sound. Throw in his spotters shouting (Keep Going!, Yeah!), By the end of the problem, which he almost sent, half the gym was cracking up. One more thing, I find far more annoying the running commentary habit of of flailing top-ropers. Asking for advice "en route" is one thing---but some people have this weird habit---especially noobish types in gyms---of bitching about a climb they can't do while dangling.

if you think screaming is bad, try hanging out at my gym. there is this guy (no names, those in town will know who im talking about...) that before getting on his plastic project route has a routine of odd like break dance moves as a way to get pumped-up. infact, one night he was all over the map getting warmed up and actually kicked my girlfriend in the face by accident. did i laugh? absolutely!!

I was kind of grunt-y this weekend. It was a little embarrassing. But hey, if that's the only way I can reach that next hold, then that's what I'm gonna do!
