What do you think is the best method for peeing at night when its cold and staying warm is an issue. In the past I have hopped out of my sleeping bag, taken the oh so long wizz, and then done about 20 jumping jacks to raise my body temperature before getting back in my bag. I have heard of keeping a bottle in the bag to pee in but this sounds awkward and messy. Any other ideas?

Use a wide mouth nalgene. Its the best way to go. Just be sure to differentiate it somehow from the ones you actually drink out of.

I've even peed in a 20 ounce drink bottle although it requires some true skill. Anything that is watertight will work but i would go with the widemouth nalgene. It requires a whole lot less tedious aiming   -Aaron

Pee bottle is the only way to go. Wide mouth. Use those clear or colored lexan Nalgene ones. Don't use them for drinking water or anything you're going to ingest. Poison: http://www.ourstolenfuture.com. Find something different to drink out of. The old Nalgenes--the translucent ones--are fine. Mal

Wide mouth bottle. If you can stand outside, it is not really cold.

From what I've heard there isn't anything wrong with ingesting a little urine. In fact, I believe you can drink your pee up to 3 times in a row before it becomes toxic. And if you really want to re-use the Nalgene, just clean it with a little bleach and you'll be fine. Otherwise, if you're in a snowcave you can poke a little hole in the snow and just roll over and pee into it. Then fill it with snow.

Zip lock bags work and they are fun to play with after they freeze. I really don"t need a wide mouth bottle. I remember reading a report in Accidents in North American Mountaineering. You should avoid using Foster cans as a P bottle.

well, I'm cheap, so I like to use those one liter gatorade bottles, they're cheaper than nalgenes, changing them avoids what I can only imagine becomes a horrid stench, and I think the opening is big enough to facilitate easy peeing, yet small enough to help prevent spillage. But i'm all for staying inside to pee, also keep the pee bottle in your bag for a while to absorb the warmth from it, but once it starts to get cool, toss it out of the bag.

Ditto on the large mouth bottle. Two tips first practice before you find yourself in dire need. Second this very use is the only thing I have found for one of those REI tiki head nalgenes, it's real hard to get them confused with your water bottle (which should also be in your bag).

Having spent over a month at a time in the snow-covered ranges (without a shower), I would recommend taking a piss right before you hit the rack. And if you wake up in the middle of the night needing to take another, take it. Not only is it really hard to get back to sleep when you gotta go, but the excess fluid in your system takes energy away from heating the rest of your body in order to heat your nasty piss. In other words: Piss and be cold now, warm and fuzzy all night long or Hold it, don't sleep and be cold, tired all the next day My too sense...

Dear Curious, Yes, you can drink your own urine. It's pretty much sterile and can be used to disinfect wounds, but will leave white scars after they heal. It's not much good for rehydration because it's salty and contains toxins, but it might give you an extra day in an emergency. And remember, please enjoy responsibly!

You know that you using a widemouth nalgene is like throwing a hotdog down a hallway. Stick with the Aquafina bottle.

and once you're done peeing in the nalagene, you can place it in your sleeping bag and use it as a hot water bottle.
