Every so often I go climbing with a good friend of mine from Montreal and he's a francophone so French is his native tongue. He speaks very good English, but sometimes when we climb together we experience problems b/c of the language barrier. I know only conversational French but not technical terms for gear, commands, knots, etc. He knows most of the basic technical terms when it comes to things like commands in English but with more technical stuff we have difficulty understanding each other. Can one of you native speakers give a list of some basic French commands as well as words for gear and things like that?

So this is for you: http://www.gdargaud.net/Climbing/Lex_En.html and this is for your partner: http://www.grimporama.com/francais/technique/dicofrang.htm ...but those are French / English , not Canadian French/ English, so you might want to discuss with your partner before letting him off belay.
