How do you think that climbing in flip flops affects the grade of the climb? My climbing shoes are really uncomfortable - I prefer flip flops. Also, do you prefer chacos or tevas?

I could top rope 5.9 in my old tevas

In the eighties at Seneca when the bridge was frequently washed out. The options to cross the creek were wade or the cables. I hiked in wearing my tevas to wade. It improves your foot work or aleast awareness. Never stubbed a toe or miss stepped. That was before the genuine forest service spec. trails.

Thongs is old school for flip flops. I prefer thongs really. And it doesn't affect the grade at all, ball up and do it. There's a climb around here, it's only a 5.6 but I solo up it in flip flops to set up a top rope. It's fun, it puts another mental aspect into climbing. And screw chacos and Tevas, go for the $1.59 Walmart brand.

I've always been game for hiking in with flip-flops. It reminds you that you dont need a $250+ pair of so called "trail" boots to find your way aound in the back country. yeah, hiking in Tiva's is cool.

But as to climbing in them....why would you do that? in my humble opinion, if you have rubber on your feet it might as well be from last night's action or C4 Stealth and pushing the grade. OR, if you want to enjoy a grade that you know you can nail....do it barefoot. It's fun...It builds up the calluses on those pretty feet and its cheaper than those feet-rolling-acu-pressure thingies. Climbing in tiva's seems to be making a statement like "Ah..I'm a stud and dont need climbing shoes". Well good, but climb barefoot and be a yogi. Even cooler.

Damn...Sorry...I just rambled on.

Reminds me of a time a guy decided to follow one of my leads in his Tevas.

He:

1) slipped around like a gym noob

2) is gonna read this and not even know its him...

3) is not gettin' any from me...EVER.

in october i climbed a few weeks in the valley with a bad-ass. he followed 10a/b finger crack in generic sandals and fleece gloves ('to teach me not to need footholds', and 'to force me not to use my hands so my gobies heal'). we simulclimbed the grack, me leading, and at the top i look down and the bastard is slab climbing the whole damn thing in his sandals. and none of this fancy sticky rubber stuff. no wonder the thing is 5.6.

he followed me up lunatic fringe, and i just about laughed my head off with him pulling the fleece gloves off with his teeth mid-crux.

even though walmart's selection of every item ever produced by man is phenomenal, my vote is for chacos.

so this climbing in flops is common, eh? i saw a fellow do just that up this 5.10+ at Riemers Ranch this winter break. i red pointed the route when he was through, and it was a toughy. i was honestly quite impressive his floppy feat... i think i'll stick with my 5.10s.

Yes I agree Chaco's are durable and comfy, but I still can't use that to justify $90 for a pair of sandals. I don't even spend that much on any of my shoes. Hence the reason I said the Walmart brand, sure they only last one season, but at a fraction of the cost of a name brand to me it's worth it. And I couldn't find any climbing rope at Walmart, good try though.
