I got the new Mountain Gear catalog yesterday, and aside from a bunch of new cool approach shoes and C3's, they had the new 6mm Mammut dyneema slings, with the same 22kN rating as the 8mm slings. Mountain Gear link They apparently ship on 3/24/06. I wish I didn't already own 8 of their 8mm slings :( Someone order some!

I've gone from 11/16" nylon runners to 12mm Spectra runners, and now I've got a bunch of Wild Country 10mm Dyneema slings (which I love). I bought a couple 8mm Mammut slings, but I find that I don't trust them as much. I am scared stiff at the concept of a 6mm Dyneema sling. I guess we all have our thresholds in how small/light the gear can be and we still trust it. My recommendation would be to buy a few, get them in hand and on your rack, then climb above a placement and see how it makes you feel. For some reason I've been unable to climb confidently above the 8mm, and can't even imagine the 6mm.

I was worried about the 8mm's at first also. Then one day while reslinging some hexes with 5.5mm tech cord (even thinner if you dont count the sheath) I wondered why i ever questioned them, and promtly purchased my first 2. Many falls later i've full faith. I wonder if Mammut would re-sling my hexes for me?

I'm still waiting for the cordellette size. That would be soooo small on the harness, and it works better for the sliding x tricks....

For some reason I've been unable to climb confidently above the 8mm, and can't even imagine the 6mm. I climb above 8mm dyneema all the time, and with full confidence. I trust Mammut that if they say 6mm is the same strength as 8mm, then they are telling the truth. I do agree that 8mm and 6mm dyneema shouldn't usually be used for slinging trees and horns, because the smaller surface area creates higher pressures and there is a greater risk for slicing the sling on something sharp. Also, while in theory I like the idea of a dyneema harness with dyneema belay loop, I think belay loops should be more beefy because of all the abuse they take.
