I have been looking at the posted pictures and i can't tell what type of climbing Laurel Knob is going to be. Obviously alot of it is slab, but what are the features like? Are the going to provide opportunity to place gear or is most of it going to be bolted? Has anyone ever climbed here before? Was it ever open for climbing? Thanks in advance for the answers!

Laurel has never been legally open to climbing. People have climbed there in the past however and there are something like 25 established lines. As far as I know current plans are to have an official opening within a few weeks after trail and rebolting work is complete. The rebolting work is definitely needed. I'll post a pic later of one of the old bolts and you'll see what I mean.

The climbing mainly follows watergrooves. Usually less than vertical but there are vertical sections on most routes and a few that have a couple of pitches of steep rock. Plenty of natural gear but bolts as well depending on the line.

Does anyone know about when this re-opening will occur? I'm doing a short week long trip sometime after May 9th and was plannin to hit the Dacks or NRG, but Laurel Knob is startin to whisper to me, and its been saying that its worth the extra drive. Also I was curious what the grade range was. I know its never been officially open, but I was just wonderin if there was any beta floating around about the lines that were covertly established. Thanks.

Peace,
Colby

Sounds like it's prime for some good old fashioned rap bolting!

I've climbed in the area and know that you should expect long runouts on slab. I've heard from a local who has done the climb Pathom(sp) on Laurel Knob that his guide(another Cashiers hard man) had belayed him from a "Firm stance." Firm stance on slab? I know that access is a difficult thing, and safety concerns can lead to access restrictions. But please don't let the Knob become a boltfest. Respect the bold NC trad style.

Here's one of the old bolts we replaced a few weeks ago at Laurel. This was actually one of the better ones.

This is your best resource for Laurel Knob http://www.carolinaclimbers.org/

If you don't find what you're looking for, post your question on the message board.

Colby,
LK is probably 4 hours south of the NRG. Also, is faces southwest - which could get toasty in May. This place is just opening up. You might want wait until they get the kinks worked out (access, retro-bolting, etc) before making this a destination.

I think that hand looks older than the bolt!

All of the above. There are some 10 or 11 pitch lines.
